SELECT HQ was the venue for autumn Branch Update no6 last night as the Edinburgh & South East of Scotland Branch gathered at The Walled Garden for an evening of discussion.

Garry Cowan from ecostrad once again delivered the technical presentation on smart electric heating, before updates from SELECT and SECTT were followed by an open debate among Members.

Former Branch Chair Keith Groom of AKD.NET also scooped the Doble-Megger prize draw goodies, which were handed over by Branch Vice Chair Alasdair Noble.

The final two Updates take place next Wednesday and Thursday in Inverness and Glasgow respectively, where new Associate Member Simpro will be among our special guests.

SELECT has been saddened to hear of the passing of Past President and association stalwart Ricky Wilson. Friends and former colleagues have paid tribute to the former Chair of our Aberdeen & North East of Scotland Branch, who was President from 1995 to 1997.

Great to see a full house at Dundee & Angus College last night as Members of our Tayside Branch gathered for their autumn update.

Once again, Garry Cowan from ecostrad delivered an engaging presentation on smart electric heating, before an apprentice insight from SECTT and plenty of discussion about industry issues.

It was also beginner's luck for new Member Jordan Harrison of Harrison Electrical (Angus) Ltd, who scooped the Doble-Megger prize draw goodies at his very first Branch Update!

Tomorrow we're at The Walled Garden for the Edinburgh & South East of Scotland Branch meeting, with the final get-togethers in Inverness and Glasgow next week, where we'll also be joined by Simpro.

A talented young electrician from a SELECT Member firm has been recognised for her “outstanding” skill, dedication and professionalism after being named the SJIB Apprentice of the Year 2026.

Katie Munro of RSE took home this year’s title after impressing judges with her exceptional technical ability, commitment to excellence and determination to succeed throughout her apprenticeship.

Tullos Training was the venue last night as we welcomed Members of the Aberdeen & North East of Scotland Autumn Branch Update. As well as discussions on a wide range of industry issues, Garry Cowan from ecostrad delivered a presentation on smart electric heating.

The winner of the Doble-Megger prize draw on the evening was Derek Anderson from D Anderson Electrical Ltd.

Next week the Branch Update meetings will be held in Tayside and Edinburgh & South East of Scotland.

Ayrshire College was the venue that hosted the third SELECT Branch Update last night. Again there was plenty of debates and chatter about the electrical industry.

Thanks to Garry Cowan from ecostrad , who did a presentation about the offerings the organisation provides.

Stewart McLintock from Member firm Baldelectrician Limited T/A ABC Electrical, won the prizes draw held on the evening, winning the Doble-Megger testing equipment.

The Aberdeen & North East of Scotland Branch Update will be held this week on Thursday 15 October at Tullos Training Ltd - we hope to see you there!

⚡ Protect the Title "Electrician" in Scotland

🔗 Sign the petition on the link in the comments below.

Electrical safety is fundamental to protecting people, homes and businesses. Yet in Scotland there is currently no statutory regulation of electricians, and the title "electrician" is not protected in law.

This means that anyone can describe themselves as an electrician without demonstrating the qualifications, skills or experience needed to carry out electrical work safely.

As Scotland progresses towards its net zero ambitions, electrical technologies and systems will become increasingly important. It is vital that electrical work is undertaken by professionals who are properly qualified, competent and accountable.

That's why we're calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to introduce:

✅ Statutory regulation of the electrical industry
✅ Protection of the title "Electrician"
✅ Higher standards of competence and accountability
✅ Greater consumer confidence and public safety

The petition is now live, and we encourage everyone who supports electrical safety, professional standards and consumer protection to sign and share it with their networks.

Together, we can help ensure that those carrying out electrical work in Scotland have the skills, qualifications and competence required to keep people safe.
