When Oaks get old they start to shut down their highest branches and create "stag heads". Highways weren't happy with all this dead wood hanging over the road, so it had to come down today. The tree will still be good for another 100 years though.

Apologies today to the good folk of Hunsonby, for their lack of electricity. It wouldn't have been good though for us to work on this Red Oak, right next to a live power line.
Shout out to Electricity North West for assisting us so quickly.

Sadly today I had to take down 3 healthy paper bark birch trees, as the customer was allergic to them. Apparently its a known thing that Birch are more allergenic than other trees.
Not known by me though. Everydays a school day!

After a recent media discussion about the public hanging of moles in certain parts of the country, I thought I understood the pros and cons of the killing and why they're hung up afterwards, According to a Moler spokesperson, its a traditional way to advertise their prowess.

This week on the way home I came across these 43 hung moles. Despite looking, there were no business cards, flyers, hash tags or QR code to advertise the very efficient moler's' contact details. So if I did wish to employ a modern day Genghis Khan to hunt moles, I'm non the wiser on how to get in contact .

So I'm wondering that if, like winning the local derby, private number plates and a large social media following, this just about bragging rights in the local moler community??

Now this is very niche.....
In the tree world most Arborists study Mattheck and his research into how the body language of trees tell us what is going on inside.
Yesterday we removed a seemingly healthy Crack Willow from a campsite, because it had vertical ridges on its lower stem, indicating a possible internal split.
Well done to Mattheck and surveyor Josh Tree Management for getting it right.

This week I found there are joys to be had, even when you fall flat on your back, pulling a chipper backwards into a Silver Birch.

I read recently that our brains don't actually mature until we're 32 years. (For us boys that's probably 82 yrs😁) so the two very capable young men who wanted to fell this tree with hand saws, have a good excuse. To be fair they had already felled 2 other big trees with the same saw, which is more than I could have done👏.
This Silver Birch had at least a ton of wood overhanging a shed and two garage roofs, so well done Mum for persuading them otherwise.

A local primary school has used us to do all the tree work identified as required by a Tree Survey. A nice touch by the school was to arrange all the timber to be left out for collection for parents to use as firewood. The speed 4 large piles disappeared at the end of each day, showed it was much appreciated. We're hoping the children enjoyed their new outdoor classroom seats too.

Those who know me would never describe me as a petrol head, but this week I've been very grateful to the ice. Big thanks to neighbour John and his vintage tractor, trailer and digger, for helping me remove all the logs and brash from this fallen Ash,
