fuelled blacksmithing!

blacksmithing extraordinaire has developed these forged as part of her efforts move away from fossil fuel metalworking and (back) to charcoal.

We caught up with her at the Summer Camp this weekend to see how our coals were doing… this is the first time Devichoys wood charcoal has been used for metalwork for probably 100plus years…

We are excited to offer a one month (or 20 days fitting around existing commitments) paid forestry internship this summer!

This placement is offered for somebody who identifies as LGBTQAI+ and is part of our ongoing work to increase diversity in the forestry sector and offer welcoming opportunities to people currently underrepresented.

In our woodland management work we aim for diversity in order to increase biodiversity and climate change resilience. And the same needs to be true for the people working in forestry if we are to achieve this on a broader scale!

Apply by April 23rd.

Full details available via the link in our bio.

Thanks to and for funding!

The busiest WWC winter yet!

This year’s felling and planting season has been a very full one:

2 Forest for Cornwall funded Agroforestry projects nearly finished (10,250 trees, a few kilometres of electric fencing, three different kinds of tree planting!)

1 funded woodland planted (650 trees, turning an average field into nature connectivity, carbon capture and potential for home grown timber)

3 ride scallops and 1 moth corridor cut at bringing light and diversity to another section of even aged oak coppice.

1 small group fell and 1 area of halo thinning in enhancing the temperate rainforest characteristics of this popular community owned wood,

1 small group fell in woods owned by .yarg to add structural and species diversity and to produce home grown firewood for staff working hard to produce home grown cheeses!

On top of this we have been undertaking training in everything from Ancient woodland assessment (from the ), Coppice advisor training (from ) to assisted felling course from Lynher training at …

We’ll rest one day!

A wonderful day showing members around the woods at and .

We looked at the work we have been helping make happen in these woods over the last 7 years including:

Oak coppice restoration,
Mixed coppice restoration,
Enrichment planting,
Continuous cover forestry,
Shelterbelt design, prep and planting,
Agroforestry,
Charcoal and firewood production and loads more besides.

Very pleased to be able to show such knowledgeable foresters around and get their thoughts on some of the more experimental work we carry out.

Plus at lunch we had a treat in the form of coffee (roasted on our Devichoys oak firewood) from and tree based teas from lou at .trees

Thanks to everyone who came along!

Last week saw us coppicing a hedge along Love Lane on behalf of ‘s Loveland community growing project. This hedge is at least 500 years old (see Lord Burleigh’s chart of Falmouth and Penryn.

Last two photos show before and after.

Next spring this hedge will send up lots of fresh young shoots as well as having lots of light for bluebells, violets and other beauties to flower.

In a few years time the rods will be the right size for “Steeping” as its know in Cornwall (hedgelaying)

Later this autumn are coming to restore a length of the non living part of the hedge that makes Cornish Hedges so interesting and important.

A real pleasure to be par of this bit of living history.

Calling all students!

Once again we are inviting students interested in getting hands on experience of regenerative forestry to join us as part of the Access to Internships programme.

During this paid internship you’ll learn about the process of managing a woodland sustainably. We are based out of Devichoys Wood, an ancient wood owned by Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Each autumn and winter we continue the ancient practise of coppicing to bring biodiversity back to this formerly neglected wood. You’ll be part of this work and get the opportunity to work with experienced foresters who will share their knowledge and enthusiasm of high quality forest management.

No experience necessary but a passion for natural ecosystems, an enjoyment of physical and outdoor work, and ability to communicate well are key qualities for successful applicants.

Many of our trainees have gone on to undertake their chainsaw tickets and take their forestry experience to the next level.

Search Exeter Uni Access to internships or talk to your employability team.

Surveying the effects of our work.

With help from and ‘s Experts In Your Field project, we have been undertaking a survey of plant diversity along the tracks at .

We are only seven years into the restoration of the coppice habitat but this graphic shows a significant correlation between our work and improvements in plant diversity.

We’ll be carrying out this survey every few years and plotting the results to monitor the effects of our work in the long term.
