What a nice little Saturday job! I thatched this 9 years ago and today it needed a small amount of maintenance. This included cleaning off the moss, fixing some bird holes and adding wire netting to prevent damage again.
Such a lovely spot looking over mevagissey.

Huntsman patching is the best way to keep your roof in good condition until thatching can take place.
This is a layer of reed fixed over the topcoat, it will prevent leaks and prevent the layers becoming too decayed so we have a good base to fix into.
Tarpaulins can also be used in the short term but if left on too long can sweat and cause more issues to the thatch, this method allows the roof to breath.

Two separate jobs joined in the middle. On the left was a new ridge and some general maintenance, on the right a full renewal, this was a job I worked on over 20 years ago while I was in the early days of learning this craft.
This was the last of the wheat I had stored so will be water reed jobs only now until the new harvest in October.
