The full video from our volunteering day at Aberdalgie Church didn’t upload with my previous post, so I’ve split the remaining footage up and added it here.
A little more from the day, showing the work carried out by the Aviva volunteers around the church grounds. I didn’t want any of the hard work that went into the day to be missed.
A big thank you again to everyone who came along and gave their time to help.

A great day at Aberdalgie Church with a group of volunteers from Aviva giving their time to help with the ongoing maintenance and improvement of the grounds and a chance to get to use my new Meta Glasses. 😎
We tackled plenty throughout the day, including weeding the paths and borders, laying fresh bark, cutting back herbaceous plants and widening the circles around established trees to give them more space and create a cleaner finish.
It was great to see what can be achieved with plenty of willing hands, and a big thank you to everyone from Aviva who volunteered their time and put in the work.
Another good step forward for the grounds at Aberdalgie Church.

Actaea simplex ‘Brunette’ is a striking herbaceous perennial grown for its deeply divided, dark purple-bronze foliage. In late summer and autumn, tall stems carry scented, creamy-white flower spikes that attract pollinators. It thrives in partial shade and moist, fertile soil, making it excellent for adding height, contrast and late-season interest to sheltered borders.

Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Firetail’ is a hardy, clump-forming perennial producing slender spikes of deep crimson-red flowers from midsummer well into autumn. It thrives in sun or partial shade and prefers moisture-retentive soil. Its long flowering period and upright habit make it excellent for adding colour, movement and structure to mixed or naturalistic borders.

Kirengeshoma palmata is an unusual woodland perennial with large, maple-like leaves and soft, waxy yellow flowers that appear from late summer into autumn. Native to Japan and Korea, it thrives in partial shade and moist, humus-rich soil. Fully hardy, it is ideal for sheltered, shady borders, where its bold foliage and late-season flowers add texture, structure and interest.

Another great horticultural event on the 19th of August, this time focusing on cut flower production, seed saving and vegetable growing.
We spent time looking around the productive growing areas and learning more about how different vegetables and flowers are grown, managed and harvested. The cut flower areas were looking particularly impressive, with a huge variety of colour and form throughout the beds.
A large part of the day focused on seed saving, including how seeds are collected, cleaned and stored for future use. We also looked at some of the different equipment and traditional methods used to separate seed from the dried plant material.
We then explored the vegetable production areas, looking at crop protection, covered growing, propagation and some of the techniques used to produce healthy crops throughout the season.
It was another really useful day and a chance to learn more about areas of horticulture that I don't necessarily work with every day. The more events and visits I attend, the more I realise just how broad horticulture is and how much there is still to learn.

A bit of an update from me and the business.

I received my graduation certificate yesterday after completing my HNC in Horticulture at SRUC Oatridge, passing with Merit.

On the 1st of September, I’ll be starting my HND in Horticulture with Plantsmanship at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
This will keep me busy along with current clients and bookings through until the end of May, and I’m really looking forward to another year of developing my knowledge, gaining more practical experience and continuing my own personal development within horticulture.

As things currently stand, Terra Garden Maintenance is fully booked until June 2027.
However, circumstances and availability can change, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’re interested in future work.

I’m looking forward to seeing where another year of learning takes me and bringing that knowledge and experience back into the work I do through Terra Garden Maintenance.

The climbing roses were cut back and tidied, removing excessive growth from the walls, trellis and roofline. The surrounding borders were cleared and tidied, and the lawn was cut to leave the garden looking neat and well maintained.
Herbicide treatment was also applied to weeds around the property's paths, patios and driveway to help keep hard surfaces clear.

Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’, commonly known as Russian sage, is a hardy perennial valued for its aromatic silvery-grey foliage and masses of blue-purple flowers from late summer into autumn. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, it is drought tolerant once established and performs particularly well during warm, dry summers. Its long-lasting flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while its upright habit provides colour, texture and structure to borders.

A reliable perennial for warmer, drier conditions, producing large clusters of pink flowers from late summer into autumn. Its fleshy leaves help it tolerate periods of drought once established, while it remains hardy through UK winters. Best grown in full sun and well-drained soil, the flowers are also an excellent late-season food source for bees and other pollinators.
