We’ll be at the Homebuilding Show in Glasgow next weekend — and most people going are focusing on the wrong thing.

They focus on:
– The unit
– The brand
– The headline figures

But that’s not what decides if a heat pump works.

It’s:
– The design
– The flow temperature
– The setup

Get that wrong… and even a “good” system will run inefficiently.
Get it right… and even a basic system will perform properly.

That’s the bit most people miss.

If you’re planning a build or renovation, this is exactly the stage where it matters.

If you’ve got drawings, bring them — or send them over beforehand and we can actually talk through your setup properly at the show.

We’ll be there if you want to go through it.

If you were given a quote — would you know what to question?

If you’re going, we’ve got free tickets here:

“Will a heat pump actually heat your house properly?”

That’s probably the most common question we hear.

The honest answer?

It depends entirely on how it’s designed.

We see a lot of systems where:

– The heat pump size is guessed rather than calculated
– Radiators aren’t suited to lower temperatures
– The system is set up to run hotter than it should

And that’s where the problems start.

When it’s done properly, it’s not complicated — it just needs to be designed around the house, not forced into it.

If you’ve looked into heat pumps, what’s your biggest concern?

Most heat pump problems aren’t caused by the heat pump.

They’re caused by how the system is designed.

We regularly see:

– Systems sized without proper heat loss calculations
– Radiators that can’t deliver enough heat
– Flow temperatures set too high, reducing efficiency

In many cases, the heat pump gets the blame — but the issue started much earlier.

A properly designed system should:

– Match the actual heat demand of the property
– Work with the emitters in the home
– Run at lower flow temperatures for efficiency

If you’re considering a heat pump, the design stage matters more than the unit itself.

If you’d like a quick assessment, feel free to send plans over.

One of the most common questions we hear is:

“Will a heat pump actually work in my home?”

In most cases, it can — but it depends on a few key things:

• Heat loss of the property
This tells you how much heat the house actually needs.

• Emitter sizing (radiators / underfloor heating)
These need to be sized correctly for lower flow temperatures.

• System design and setup
Flow temperatures, controls, and overall system design make a big difference to performance and running costs.

It’s not usually a case of simply swapping a boiler for a heat pump.

When the system is designed properly for the property, it can work very well — even in many older homes.

One of the most common concerns with heat pumps is whether they will actually heat the house properly.

In most cases, they can — but it depends entirely on how the system is designed.

Heat loss calculations, emitter sizing and flow temperatures all play a part. It’s not just a case of swapping a boiler for a heat pump.

As always, good system design is critical.

Had an interesting conversation this week with a partner we work with around how heat pumps, EVs and battery storage are starting to link together.

They’ve recently moved onto a smart tariff and are now looking at how a heat pump would fit alongside EV charging and potentially battery storage.

They also tested running a ground source heat pump from an EV battery. The bi-directional charging didn’t work with their BMW or Renault, but did work with a Skoda, which is something you wouldn’t have considered a few years ago.

It feels like more projects are starting to move in this direction, where heating, electricity and storage are all being thought about together rather than separately.

Still early days for a lot of this, but it’s an interesting shift.

A recent air source heat pump installation on a stone cottage.

Heat pumps can work well in many existing homes when the system is designed correctly for the property.

Funding is available for many retrofit heat pump installations in Scotland, and more homeowners are exploring alternatives to traditional heating systems.

As always, good system design is critical.

If you're considering a heat pump in Perthshire and would like some advice, feel free to get in touch.

One of the most common questions we get about heat pumps is whether they work in older homes.

In many cases they can work very well, but the key is ensuring the system is properly designed for the property. Heat loss calculations, emitter sizing and system design are all important parts of making sure a heat pump performs efficiently.

Every home is different, which is why understanding the property properly is always the first step.
