During a recent service call, I encountered a situation where a client had engaged a "builder" to render their chimney and install cowls on the chimney pots. The "builder" proceeded to cap the chimneys, despite the presence of two operational gas fires, without prior inquiry about active appliances. I obviously made the two gas fires safe and provided an estimate for replacing the caps with appropriate cowls. Upon contacting the builder, the client was informed that the current setup is acceptable, as the cappers are reportedly vented. This could have been deadly. If you have working fires in a chimney please consult a Gas Safe Engineer regarding anyworks.
