The site file used to live in the cab of a van. Now it's in every site agent's hands.

We've issued tablets to all Civcon site agents.

Sounds like a small change. It isn't.

Drawings, RAMS, ITPs, inspection records and daily progress are now pulled up and captured live on site, on the current revision, and shared straight through to the office and the client.

The reason it matters is simple. Information is only useful if it's the right version and it's in the right hands at the right time. Paper gets left in a van, gets soaked, goes home in someone's pocket, or turns out to be superseded two weeks ago. Every time that happens there's a hole in the record, and holes in the record cost time and money, usually at the worst possible moment.

Working from one live source means:
- Everyone is on the current revision, not last month's
- Records are captured as the work happens, not written up later from memory
- Our clients see accurate information without waiting until Friday
- Nothing falls down the gap between site and office

Our clients trust us to give them a straight answer on where a job is. This is us making sure that answer is always backed by a proper trail.

Street trees don't die in town centres because of the weather. They die because there isn't enough soil under the paving.

A pocket of topsoil surrounded by compacted sub base will keep a tree alive for a few years and then it declines. And a dying tree in a brand new scheme is the most visible failure there is.

Same story with the rest of it. Public realm schemes get judged on how they look on opening day and how they perform five winters later, and those two things are decided by completely different parts of the job. The stone gets the attention. The levels, the sub base and the drainage decide whether it lasts.

Knostrop Surfacing Scheme - complete and handed back to Yorkshire Water.

Before the surface went down: site strip, formation works, chamber repairs, concrete reinstatement and drainage. The tarmac is what gets photographed, but it's the metre underneath it that determines whether the job lasts.

Lewis at Yorkshire Water on the result:

"Civcon did a great job on the tarmacking works. The team were professional, efficient and delivered a high quality end product. It was a quality finish and we're pleased with the outcome."

Some of the Civcon team filled a trolley at Aldi UK yesterday and dropped the lot at Pontefract's Trussell Trust foodbank. Rice, pasta, beans, porridge oats, long-life milk, tinned veg - the basics on the paper list pinned by the door.

It's easy to read about foodbanks at a distance. Standing in an Aldi UK aisle costing up tinned beans, it lands a bit differently. Behind every tin is somebody you'd know. The bloke who fixed your boiler. The kid who sits next to yours at school. People you nod at in the queue at Greggs.

Massive thanks to the volunteers running Pontefract's Trussell Trust. You do the hard, day-in-day-out work, and you do it with grace.

If your business hasn't done a foodbank shop this year, please consider it. The Trussell Trust will tell you exactly what's needed. An afternoon, a trolley, and somebody in your town eats this week.
