Maintenance work at St Peter’s Church in Goetre (Goytre), near Abergavenny. The church dates back in written records to 14th-century origins, though the current building is an Early Victorian Gothic rebuilding from 1846. #1846

This fireplace transformation started after the homeowner began removing the original fireplace and quickly realised the project had become much bigger than expected.

I was brought in with a blank canvas and a reference photo of the style they wanted to achieve.

The new fireplace was built entirely by hand using traditional lime mortar and natural stone collected from the field behind the house. Every stone was hand-dressed on site and carefully fitted as the build progressed.

The arch and lintels were made from reclaimed Forest of Dean stone, while the hearth and mantel were finished with Indian slate.

The goal was simple: to create a fireplace that looked as though it had always belonged in the house.

Seeing a project go from the first photo to the second is exactly why I love working with stone.

Working on a Piece of Welsh History.

It’s been a real privilege to carry out maintenance work at Ty-asch, Mamhilad, Monmouthshire – a remarkable Grade II* listed farmhouse dating back to the late 16th century.

Largely unchanged for over 400 years, Ty-asch is regarded as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional Welsh farmhouse. Every repair and maintenance task has been completed with care and respect, helping to protect the character and history of this extraordinary building.

Adding to its story, Ty-asch was recently used as a filming location for Lluest, the first-ever Welsh-language Western, produced by Cardiff-based Severn Screen. The 18th-century period revenge film stars Aimee-Ffion Edwards and Rhodri Meilir, and is the first feature to emerge from the Sinema Cymru development scheme.

It’s an honour to play a small part in preserving a building that continues to celebrate Welsh history, craftsmanship and culture.

I’ve recently been working on this fascinating old stone building, standing alone in a field with no road access, mains power or water. Despite its simplicity, it’s full of character, including a beautiful bell tower that gives the building a unique presence in the landscape.

My task was to repair part of the stone doorway that had been damaged by a digger. Finding a suitable replacement stone wasn’t easy, so rather than introducing a different material, I took the opportunity to work a piece of stone that was already on site.

After dressing the stone into a workable block, I hand-carved the replacement section to match the existing masonry. Thankfully, the colour and texture were a near-perfect match, helping the repair blend seamlessly into the original stonework.

It’s always satisfying when a repair looks as though it has always been there.

A recent project completed at Llanvihangel Court, replacing the worn and weathered stone stair treads with new locally sourced stone from Black Mountain Quarries .

The original steps had seen many years of use and were beginning to deteriorate. The new treads have been carefully installed to improve durability while maintaining the character and appearance of the existing stonework.

It’s always satisfying to see a project come together, especially when using quality local materials that complement their surroundings so well.

Another one finished and in place.

Hand carved from reclaimed Indian stone and made to last for years to come. I love working with reclaimed materials—every piece has its own character, and no two signs ever come out exactly the same.

This one now sits proudly at the bottom of the driveway, giving a warm welcome and adding a bit of handcrafted character to the entrance.

There’s something satisfying about taking an old piece of stone and turning it into something that will be enjoyed every day.

The old brickwork pillars at this entrance had seen better days, so they were carefully dismantled and rebuilt in natural stone to blend in better with the house and surrounding wall.

Finished with solid stone caps and bespoke hand-carved plaques to give the entrance a strong, traditional look that will last for years to come.

Built using traditional methods and materials so it will weather naturally and stand the test of time.

Every stone placed by hand…
the crane just helped with the heavy caps. 💪🪨
