A section of dry stone wall I've built on the Mendips with a passageway to let animals through called a lunky.
Although stone walls are excellent habitat for wildlife they can also be a barrier for many animals, so passageways though the wall are important.
They do also extend the life of the wall. If animals such as badgers want to get from one side to the other and there's no lunky, they will either tunnel under it, which will eventually cause subsidence, or climb over it, which will loosen stones on the top, especially on a Mendip wall like this which is built without coping stones.
