Choosing the right insulation for your self-build is a delicate balancing act. It’s not just about choosing insulation that keeps your home at the optimum temperature; it’s about selecting an insulation material that complements the timber frame technology you will use in your new home, is readily available at a good price, meets your sustainability goals, and meets your budget.

We asked Simon for his advice on what to consider when it comes to insulation. Click here to read the Q&A in full 👉 https://www.frametechnologies.co.uk/insights-updates/need-to-know-insulation

True value isn't what something costs when you buy it, but what it delivers over its lifetime.

A timber frame home with excellent fabric performance costs less to heat (and cool!) year after year; it's more comfortable; it qualifies for better mortgage rates, and it retains its value more strongly. It’s a fabric first, fit-and-forget solution that is worthy of your investment.

One of our best pieces of advice for self-builders is to make sure you don’t get seduced into cutting costs in crucial areas when budgets are tight. The clients who come back to us most satisfied, years after moving in, are nearly always the ones who built to the highest fabric standard they could afford, and who now live in homes that are warm, efficient, and genuinely future-proof.

When budgets get tighter, it can be tempting to cut costs. And while there are areas where you can save money - or at least delay splurging until you’ve recouped some costs - there are others where choosing a cheaper price over better value will cost you more in the long term.

One of these crucial parts of the build is the fabric of your home: the structural panels, the insulation specification, the airtightness detailing, and the overall thermal performance of your timber frame package. The fabric of your home isn't a product you can upgrade later. It's the foundation everything else sits on — and once it's built, it's built.

Considering a barn conversion?

Old farm buildings can offer unique features, such as double-height space, old beams, beautiful stonework, timber cladding and rustic charm. By protecting and working around the original character of the barn, you can create a really striking home. Plus, as these buildings are usually situated amongst idyllic countryside, they provide a wonderful plot.

Take a look at ‘barn conversions - need to know’ in our Self Build Guide for some helpful advice.

Building with timber frame and using structurally insulated panel frame technology is the best way to insulate your home. This delivers exceptional energy-efficient building envelopes and helps to keep bills low for the lifetime of your home. However, when it comes to insulation, there’s a lot to consider, including material, price, sustainability goals and availability.
