Dry rot leaves clues long before the wood completely fails — and my photos show all the key signs to watch for.
Look out for:
🧵 Hyphal strands creeping through the timber as the fungus searches for moisture
🌫 Mycelium with its white, cotton-like growth spreading across surfaces
🪵 Cracked or brittle wood that crumbles under pressure
🍄 Fruiting bodies releasing spores and signalling advanced decay
But here’s the part most people don’t realise:
Dry rot only thrives when conditions are perfect — and those conditions are often created by surprisingly simple issues.
💧 Leaking gutters or downpipes can constantly feed moisture into walls and timber.
🌬 Poor ventilation traps humidity and prevents the wood from drying out.
🔧 Minor plumbing leaks or damp patches left untreated become the ideal breeding ground.
Fixing small issues early — like repairing gutters, improving airflow, and dealing with moisture — can stop dry rot before it ever takes hold.
If you’re seeing any of these signs in your home, it’s time to act before the damage spreads.
