Understanding Bathroom Electrical Zones
When people ask why an electrician can't just put a socket or light wherever they want in a bathroom, the answer is simple: it's all about safety.
Bathrooms are divided into different "zones" based on how close electrical equipment is to water. The closer something is to a bath or shower, the stricter the safety rules become.
Zone 0
This is inside the bath or shower tray itself, where equipment could be completely submerged.
Only electrical equipment specifically designed for this environment can be installed here, and it must operate at a very low voltage with a high level of water protection.
Zone 1
This is the area directly above the bath or shower, up to 2.25 metres from the floor.
Only certain lights, shower units and extractor fans that are specifically rated for this zone can be fitted.
Zone 2
This extends 60 cm beyond the edge of the bath or shower.
Electrical equipment installed here must still be suitable for damp conditions and have the correct IP (Ingress Protection) rating.
Outside the Zones
Areas outside these zones are much less restricted, but electrical work still needs to comply with the UK's wiring regulations and be protected appropriately, usually by an RCD (Residual Current Device).
Why It Matters
These rules aren't there to make life difficult—they're there to reduce the risk of electric shock in one of the wettest rooms in your home.
If you're planning a new bathroom, replacing lights, installing an extractor fan or adding features such as a heated mirror, it's worth checking what's allowed before buying anything. Choosing the right products from the start can save time, money and unnecessary hassle.
