Here is something most people get wrong about solar payback: the panels are the cheapest part of the system. On a panels plus battery install they are only about 10% of the cost. The scaffolding, labour and inverter stay roughly the same whether you fit a modest array or fill the roof.

So the real question is not how cheap the panels are. It is how much electricity each square metre of your roof can produce, and whether the system is designed and run properly once it is live. Get that right and a well configured system can pay for itself in six to seven years in southern England.

A solar installer was fined £120,000 last year after fitting panels without edge protection. A worker fell and broke his femur. The job involved moving nine panels.

UK law requires full scaffolding with guardrails for almost every rooftop solar installation. Ladders do not meet the legal standard. If a quote comes in unusually cheap and scaffolding isn't mentioned, it is worth asking why.

A solar system should last 25 years. The company installing it needs to still be operating and standing behind its work. Cutting health and safety is usually a sign of wider shortcuts. What questions do you ask before choosing an installer?

Two work experience students from Reading School spent the full week with us, and by Friday they were designing solar PV systems for their own school roof.

Roof orientation, shading, system sizing, export limits. They worked through it properly, using the same process our engineers follow on every commercial project.

It is easy to underestimate how much a motivated young person can absorb in five days when the subject matter is real and the work is genuine. Both students were excellent.

There is also a broader point here. The UK needs a generation of engineers, designers, and energy professionals who understand how solar and battery systems actually work. That does not happen without early exposure to the subject. Schools, colleges, and employers all have a part to play.
