Turning the graphite section of a pencil today. My mate Tomislav posted something similar recently and half the comments were people mourning the tragic loss of a perfectly good pencil. Here’s one I did years back — straight from a Poundland multipack, not exactly a rare collector’s item. In my opinion, it’s a cracking little test of tool control and teaches you to use a light touch. Fun, satisfying, and absolutely not a crime against stationery.Drop a comment below — preferably before someone starts a petition to save the pencils.
Have a great weekend. ❤️

I don’t do tutorials, but this close‑up of a spindle section should keep those requesting happy and show exactly how I turn a cove.Cutting a cove with a spindle gouge is all about that fluid three‑part motion: twist, swing, then raise the handle. It’s a scooping action — basically the mirror image of turning a bead.Start with the flute closed, ease into the cut, and keep control so the gouge doesn’t skate across the wood like it’s late for a bus.And the usual reminders: wear your PPE, stay in control, and don’t attempt anything you’re not confident with. The lathe rewards skill, not optimism.

A lot of you ask for slow-motion, and these little caps are
ridiculously satisfying in slo-mo.
Watching the shavings peel off is downright therapeutic. This angle is a bit unusual too - and long, clean shavings off kiln-dry oak are always a treat. That finish off the tool is always a boost to my mood.
If you've seen this one before, apologies - I'm tied up with repeat production work at the moment.
But my fans tell me they enjoy the repeats now and then, especially when they've missed the original. I’m still turning, still covered in shavings, still pretending this is all perfectly normal. Thank you for everyone who follow, share, comment and like. It is appreciated. ❤️

I often get asked how different woods react to the tools, and whether I change my techniques for each species. The full answer would take more than I short post, but generally I use the same techniques across the board — the only real difference is that harder woods take a bit longer because I take lighter cuts.

These two foot covers show it perfectly (picture at the end). Same approach, same tools, just a touch more patience with the denser timber.

Two videos… both a good level of skill, wildly different results. One pulls 12 million views, the other limps along at 20 thousand. After 47 years at the lathe, I can tell you this much: I’ll probably never fully understand the mysteries of the algorithm, but I’m learning — slowly, stubbornly, and with a raised eyebrow. So here’s a question for you lot: which one do you think got the views, and which one actually takes the most skill(Spoiler: the internet doesn’t always reward craftsmanship.)feel free to share

Free‑styling on the lathe always relaxes me, clears the tension, and reminds me to slow down. I should make more time for it. (This turning was two years ago) Mental and physical health are tightly connected — when one slips, the other usually follows. We all cope in different ways, but whoever you are and wherever you are in life, you’ll need support now and again. Be kind to yourself, and don’t hesitate to talk if you’re struggling. And if there’s a friend you haven’t seen or heard from in a while, give them a call. Sometimes that small check‑in makes a bigger difference than you realise. It’s ok not to be ok. I’ve seen close family and friends hit breaking point, and it taught me that none of us are immune. If you feel overwhelmed or stuck, seek professional help — it’s a sign of strength, not weakness.Look after yourself: whether that’s meditation, exercise, time in nature, or simply talking things through with someone you trust.“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”Please share — we need to look out for each other.

The dog‑toe/pad feet again — apparently you can’t get enough of these little wooden legs. I wonder how many will watch to the end? I’ve added some commentary this time to give a bit of insight… and before anyone asks, when I say “3 mill”, I mean millimetres, not 0.003 inches (Also referred to as "3 thou".) , not £3 million, and not three millipedes 😜🤣.I’ve got a few big production runs coming up over the next week, so if you notice fewer videos, don’t panic — I haven’t been kidnapped by a rogue lathe. Have a great weekend.
Please note: This isn’t a tutorial — it’s just how I work. Only do what you’re comfortable with. Every woodturner is responsible for their own safety and the correct PPE.

I turn a few of these oak bases — always a pleasure and Oak never fails to look good.

Not a tutorial.
Use full PPE, stay within your own skill level, and don’t attempt anything you’re not comfortable with. Every woodturner is responsible for their own safety.

Tried to get the camera as close to my own viewpoint as possible.
Not the easiest setup — the phone was blocking part of my view — so this is very much an experiment. I couldn’t film like this often, but I’m curious whether you think the angle is worth the hassle. Drop a comment and let me know.
Thanks for sharing, comments and likes❤️
Safety note: This is not a tutorial. I’m simply showing what I do at the lathe. Only attempt techniques you’re fully comfortable with. Every woodturner is responsible for their own safety.
