Electric vehicles aren’t for everyone and they’re certainly not the final solution.
But for the right use case, they make a lot more sense than many people think.
If you can charge at home, don’t regularly exceed your vehicle’s range (which most drivers don’t), and take advantage of an overnight off-peak tariff… the numbers start to stack up quickly.
We’ve seen a noticeable rise in EV charger enquiries over the past few weeks. Likely driven by ongoing fuel price uncertainty, many who were previously on the fence are now making the switch.
From a business perspective, the benefits are hard to ignore:
• Just 4% BIK tax for company cars
• 100% first-year tax relief on new fully electric vehicles
• Lease payments counted as an allowable expense
At Severn Electrical, we’ve been installing EV chargers since 2019 and we use EVs in our own day to day operations.
The reality is 20,000 miles has cost us around £400 in “fuel” using a £0.07 overnight tariff. Maintenance on our Model 3 since 2023? Zero.
Yes, depreciation is still a factor but the growing used EV market offers great value, with many vehicles already having taken that initial hit. Leasing is also becoming an increasingly attractive option given the low running costs.
We regularly speak with both businesses and homeowners after installation, and the feedback is overwhelmingly positive once people experience EV ownership firsthand.
EVs might not be for everyone but they’re worth a proper look.
Run the numbers honestly… you might be surprised.
