Ashmore Manor is a large country house which sits on the edge of Dorset’s highest village and consequently enjoys fantastic uninterrupted views which extend 40 miles southwards towards the Isle of Wight.

We were delighted to be appointed to consider extension and alterations to the main house, originally designed by William Curtis Green, (the architect responsible for the design of Dorchester Hotel in London), a new farmhouse & farm buildings together with a replacement of an existing cottage, all part of the estate.

The extension and alterations to the main house included a new link to an existing oak framed annexe with a new games room, from where the family could relax together and enjoy views over the garden, adjacent indoor pool and kitchen/dining spaces.

The new oak-framed, and elm-clad farmhouse and farm buildings were carefully designed to sit comfortably in this beautiful part of rural Dorset, an area of outstanding natural beauty, whilst reflecting the existing oak-framed annexe which sits attached to the main house.

Seamlessly inserted on and behind Wilton’s main street , this small development, part gated, part open, part apartments and part terraced housing, replaces a former garage yard, therefore enhancing the conservation area in which it is located.

The architectural vocabulary of cream render, warm red brickwork banding and flint infill, all punctuated by dormer and oriel windows and varied rooflines and gables is expertly handled to produce a traditional but timeless aesthetic which owes nothing to pastiche and everything to architectural sensitivity and appropriate response to context.

Florence Court is a residential development of houses and apartments arranged around a shared courtyard garden in the ancient Saxon town of Wilton, home to one of the UK’s famous carpet brands. The development sits close to an important Romanesque styled Listed church, a medieval chapel and alms-houses all within an historic conservation area.

The shared landscaped courtyard space between the houses and apartments provides an important sense of place and a place for residents to sit and socialise with one another to enhance the sense of community. The scale, form and appearance of the development reflects the local use of materials, particularly the use of brick and flint banding in external walls. The development received a What House award for best exterior design

The farmhouse and its ancillary farm buildings are Listed and they sit within an area of outstanding natural beauty. We were commissioned by the owners to consider proposals for altering the layout of the farmhouse as the main family home, converting and extending one of the stone-built cowsheds to provide ancillary living accommodation and conversion of the stables and stalls to provide bed & breakfast accommodation

Park Farm is a former farmstead built in the early 19th century on the site of a former workhouse. The group of buildings comprises a well-mannered and proportioned, stone-built farmhouse, stone-built threshing barn, cowshed and a courtyard arrangement of former cow stalls and stable buildings.
We were commissioned by the owners to consider proposals for altering the layout of the farmhouse as the main family home, converting and extending one of the stone-built cowsheds to provide ancillary living accommodation and conversion of the stables and stalls to provide bed & breakfast accommodation.

The adaptation of an C18 Grade II Listed water mill on the River Avon to create a wedding and private party venue. Accommodation is arranged over four floors which had proven to be a commercial problem for previous restaurant operators. The internal arrangement was reviewed, historic fabric assessed and proposals developed to allow the building to be used for multiple functions simultaneously.

The structure was carefully dismantled, stonework reconstructed, elm trusses sensitively repaired before being re-assembled. A modern, calm and elegant interior was created with a recessed Skyframe glass façade, wide plank Dinesen floors, underfloor heating and minimal visual intervention.

A dilapidated Grade II curtilage listed C17 cart shed in The Cotswolds has been converted to create ‘The Summerhouse’, a unique and special place to sit, read, cook, dine and sleep. The building occupies a tremendous location on the estate, adjoining wild flower meadows and with far reaching views across open countryside. The simplicity and honesty of the structure were recognised as important characteristics to preserve. The open-fronted elevation with its jowelled oak posts and beams supporting a solid stone slate roof needed to remain uncompromised.

Bonny Doone is a private house built in the 1930s in an Arts & Crafts cottage style. Our clients had previously extended the house to the rear and wished to provide their enlarged home with a bigger entrance hall and staircase.

Given the restricted space to the side of the house because of the boundary position and drive, the new staircase is enclosed in a projecting turret-like extension with curved end to soften its visual impact whilst providing an interesting space from within. Clerestorey glazing at the top of the stair enclosure provides abundant natural light, fine views of the trees in the vicinity whilst maintaining visual privacy to the neighbouring properties.
