Our Charity Golf Day in aid of Haven House Children's Hospice takes place on 11 September, and all golf spaces are officially full. Thank you to everyone who's signed up, we can't wait for the day itself! ⛳

Steel is one of the biggest cost drivers in a ductwork package, and the market has been volatile.

Import quotas, global supply pressures, and the lag between price movements and tender pricing all create real uncertainty. The way we manage this is straightforward. Long-term supply agreements with our steel suppliers, and inflation allowances built into tenders for work that does not start for 12 to 18 months.

We are not immune to market movements. No contractor is. But we price honestly, we plan ahead, and we do not come back to clients mid-programme with surprises.

Ductwork is rarely the first trade on a floor, and it is rarely the last.

It sits in the middle of a programme, coordinating with structure, ceilings, mechanical, electrical and sprinkler contractors, all of whom have their own deadlines.

When sequencing goes wrong, it shows. Ductwork installed before the structure is ready gets damaged. Ductwork installed too late holds up the ceiling contractor and pushes the whole floor. Either way, someone is paying for it.

The way to avoid it is straightforward: detailed pre-construction coordination, a programme that accounts for the interfaces, and a site team that communicates early when something is going to move.

That is how RDS approaches every project. Not because it is complicated, but because it is the job.

The construction skills gap does not fix itself.

Experienced ductwork fabricators and installers take years to develop. There is no shortcut to the point where someone can hold tolerance consistently, read a drawing accurately, and work efficiently in a live site environment. The only way to build that depth of team is to invest in people before they are fully formed and keep investing as they develop.

RDS brings apprentices and improvers through alongside experienced tradespeople. It takes longer and it costs more in the short term. The return is a team with genuine depth, consistent standards, and the capacity to take on more work without compromising quality.

It is easy to talk about ductwork as if it installs itself. Drawings, specifications, fire ratings and programmes all matter, but none of it reaches a finished building without the people who design, fabricate and install it.

The estimator who reads a job correctly at tender stage. The detailer who turns a design into something buildable. The fabricators in the workshop holding tolerance section after section. The supervisors and installers who keep a floor moving while three other trades work around them.

The reputation that brings clients back to RDS is not built on one good job. It is built on a team that turns up and gets it right, consistently, across project after project.

Most ductwork on a commercial job is general ventilation, and it all lives or dies by one specification.

That is DW/144. It sorts ductwork into pressure classes A to D, and the class sets the sheet thickness, stiffening, jointing and sealing. Get it wrong and it shows later as leakage and a system that never hits its design figures.

We build to it from the first cut, so what leaves the workshop installs cleanly and tests first time.

Another look behind the scenes at 7 Millbank, this time on storage and logistics.

With deliveries booked in tightly, just three or four days ahead of installation, having the right storage area in place is essential to keeping the job moving. Only level two and level eight are being fitted out as CAT A on this project, so we worked with the client to set up a dedicated, fenced-off storage area using the remaining floor space.

It's a simple solution, but it keeps materials secure, deliveries organised, and the programme on track.

Getting to a World Cup semi-final doesn't happen by accident.

England made it that far, and while it wasn't the ending anyone wanted, that kind of run takes preparation, teamwork, and the ability to perform under pressure when the stakes are highest. That is something anyone in construction understands.

RDS has been backing the lads all tournament, and we're proud of every step of that run.
