For garden designers, the relationship with a good nursery can be just as important as the design itself. Finding the right tree or plant - the right species, size, form and quality - can make all the difference when turning a planting plan into a living landscape.

That’s where a good nursery becomes an invaluable partner.

For more than 50 years, Ladybrook Nursery has worked with designers and developers, supplying specimen trees and plants to some of the UK’s most prestigious residential schemes.

Its 13-acre nursery in Stockport is home to an extensive range of perennials, grasses, ferns, shrubs and specimen acers, alongside pleached trees and multi-stems. The team also works with specialist growers across the UK and Europe to source topiary, hedging and other unusual plant material for projects where something more specific is required.

We’re delighted to welcome them to the SGLD as an Affiliate Business Partner and look forward to sharing their expertise with our community.

Great to see three of our Registered Members shortlisted in the Landscape Institute Awards this year, including:

- Andy Sturgeon Design for Beningbrough: The Mediterranean Garden

- BD Landscape Architects for The Strand: Harbour Public Realm AND for ARK EdCity

- Stefano Marinaz Landscape Architecture for the Future Plants Landscape: A Botanical Innovation Hub

Pictured here is the Future Plants Landscape in The Netherlands, a living laboratory where growers and designers come together to explore the potential of plants.

Designed by Stefano Marinaz Landscape Architecture as an evolving landscape, the garden showcases emerging and established species, testing how they grow, combine and adapt over time.

More than a nursery, it is a space for experimentation, observation and discovering new, more diverse and resilient approaches to planting.

Congratulations to all our members and best of luck in the final judging process.

When is a garden finished? Not on the day it's planted.
That's the message running through two joyful new documentaries with Piet Oudolf and Arjan Boekel, filmed in Piet's own garden at Hummelo and on the site of Superbloei in Arnhem. The latter is a project that has been created by LOLA Landscape Architects in collaboration with Arjan and De Bloeimeesters as the introduction to a new green structure within the city of Arnhem in The Netherlands.

Conversations between Oudolf and Boekel make it clear that while there's often a budget for installation, the cost of ongoing maintenance remains an afterthought, when it's precisely that management which determines whether planting evolves into a resilient, biodiverse ecosystem. The overall message is that work does not end with the design; it is about guiding a garden over time and understanding the cycles of the seasons, decay, and regrowth.

The films show two garden makers working in the heart of the city, making places where people and plants coexist and where biodiversity becomes tangible when design and management are aligned.

It's an invitation to explore a garden not as a finished image, but as an ongoing process.

Behind every beautifully crafted garden is a team of skilled makers bringing ambitious designs to life.

From bespoke seating and elegant gates to pergolas, outbuildings and finely crafted timber structures, exceptional joinery can transform a garden from great to extraordinary.

That's why we're delighted to welcome Jonathan Blackburn Studio as an Affiliated Business Partner of the SGLD.

Based in Oxfordshire, Jonathan has spent more than 15 years collaborating with some of the UK's leading garden designers and landscapers, helping to realise award-winning gardens, RHS Chelsea Flower Show projects and prestigious private estates. The studio's expertise lies in combining traditional craftsmanship with technical know-how, creating bespoke timber features that are as practical as they are beautiful.

Whether working from detailed architectural drawings or developing ideas from an initial concept, the team specialises in turning creative visions into lasting outdoor spaces.

AI is changing the way we work. It can help generate ideas, visualise concepts and explore different design styles in seconds.

But a great garden is about so much more than creating a beautiful image. It's about understanding your space, your lifestyle and the unique conditions of your garden.

It's knowing which plants will thrive, how the light changes throughout the day, how the garden will evolve over time, and how to create a place that's beautiful, practical and rich in biodiversity.

That's where the expertise of a skilled garden designer makes all the difference.

AI is an exciting new tool but the creativity, experience and personal connection that comes from working with a professional designer simply can't be replaced

This beautiful London garden was designed by Dan Bristow of Studio Bristow who is working toward SGLD Registered Membership, having just passed his second project in our accreditation process.

The house has recently been reimagined by SAM Architects so Dan bled the interior's polished concrete floor outdoors to unify the two, and let simple crushed aggregate do the rest of the hard landscaping.

He chose a rare Chinese Quince to anchor the planting, with pink blooms, fragrant fruit and flaking bark in maturity, while a Pineapple Guava ripens just as winter sets in.

Other highlights include a reflecting pool, berries and rosehips which were high on Dan's clients' priorities lists to draw in the birds.

Behind the house, a miniature courtyard with no direct sun holds a Full Moon Maple and Aspidistra, glimpsed from every room downstairs.

Dan says "We had Dungeness and Derek Jarman in mind throughout, and the way sun catches light through leaves. I'd like to think we've captured a bit of both here."

Thinking of becoming a Registered Members of SGLD, follow the link in our bio to find out more.
