This very shallow 10° roof had slate vents installed that were the cause of leaks since they shouldn’t be used below 20°. To stop the leaks we removed the vents and to maintain ventilation we installed top abutment ventilation strips under the lead flashing. Problem solved. An extra downpipe was fitted too to carry the large capacity of water runoff directly into the guttering serving the lean-to roof.

Another prize c**k up by muppets who don’t have the first clue of how to cut a valley. Then yours truly puts it right. It’s not hard. Use the correct materials is the first rule. 2nd (recommendation) rule is have someone from your local area with some accountability do the work, preferably recommended by someone who’s had a previous good experience with said recommended roofer (tradesman). Ask the question, why is my roof leaking? Did I use some random guy from the back of beyond who no one has ever heard of and did I trust this guy without any real credibility. Well then ask yourself, do I appreciate that ole cliché, buy cheap and buy twice.

Repairs to dormers both back and front that were leaking badly. Why were they leaking? Well, the poor chap (home owner) didn’t know where else to turn so he thought using Checkatrade was a viable option to having new roof coverings to afore said dormers. The results were not only leaks to the guy that employed the Checkatrade doughnut but to his neighbours roof too. The photos show how it should be done. I didn’t think to take photos of the complete and utter mess this muppet had made. And another thing, if you think you’re getting a local guy when using this Mickey Mouse outfit then think again. The customer explained how he saw an 01223 number suggesting he was from Cambridge. Well this guy drove down from Lincoln. I kid you not. Who in their right mind would drive over two hours each way to do a run of the mill job. These dormers can be done in a day including redecking and fully insulated too. Only desperate people sign up to these kind of outfits. If they were half decent tradesmen then they wouldn’t need to rely on these websites that claim all their tradesmen are checked. They’re not checked (sufficiently). If they were then poor retired, anxious, vulnerable people like who I’ve been working for wouldn’t get ripped by unscrupulous, self gaining, money grabbing midlanders.
And for the record, anyone can lay a rubber sheet on a roof and glue it down. But can they do the detailing and do they know how to use torch-on materials that are compatible with the neighbouring roof and how to bring the two together successfully. Since the heavy rain, I spend every day putting right amateurs c**k ups. Rant over. Choose your roofer carefully. Usually by recommendation.

This is the finished job we did at Whaddon. It took six weeks to erect the scaffolding, strip 15,000 tiles and bump up and lay 15,000 new tiles and then drop the scaffolding. It was a very successful job. Also very nice customers which always helps.

These photos show our current job. The property is a detached house that has about 15,000 clay plain tiles on it. This roof is only about 20 years old but the tiles are defective and are breaking up so the customer has been left with little choice but to replace all the tiles. We are not going to remove the existing felt and battens as they are still in good order. I’ll update this post adding photos as we progress. The new tiles that we are fitting are Sahtas Restoration which are a clay handcrafted tile. I believe they are manufactured in Turkey. They are almost identical to Heritage clay plain tiles.

This is the garage conversion we did in November/December 2021. The only thing we didn’t do were the electrics. It was a complete refurb. Bricked up the garage door, fitted new doors raised the roof by about 18” then fitted an Epdm single ply system inc a big roof window of flat glass. Fully insulated stud walls, floors and ceiling before tacking, plastering and rendering the outside.
4 weeks work.

This was the last job we did in 2021 and finished just after Xmas in the new year. It was in Weston and took a couple of weeks. Half of the job involved a lot of carpentry with the changing of water damaged rafters, fitting new timber fascia boards and fitting new weatherboard cladding to the gables. We bedded the verge tiles on cement mortar but the ridge tiles were fitted with a dry ridge system tiles are Marley Acme clay Heather Blend. I did put this on my personal fb page before I’d made this Business page so may look familiar.

Here was another job for Eksbuilders. To the untrained eye it’s difficult to see but this was a hip that diminished into a parallel valley and took quite a bit of working out how we tackle this one but it turned out well in the end and Mick Hughes the home owner was delighted with he results. And he also made a banging cup of Rosie Lee, which for some strange reason had an effect on the overall outcome of the job.

Fitting new Velux windows for a loft conversion. These particular windows were solar powered opening which is great since they don’t need wiring into the main power supply. There’s nothing like getting some natural light into a space.
