Not sure what actually happens when a chimney sweep arrives?

If you've never had your chimney swept professionally before, you might not know quite what to expect.

Will it be messy?
How long will it take?
What actually happens once we start?

When we arrive, we don't just get the brushes out and start sweeping.

We begin by looking at the chimney and fireplace, checking the setup and making sure we're happy that everything is suitable for sweeping.

We then protect the area we're working in before Karl gets to work with the rotary sweeping equipment.

Once the sweeping is complete, we carry out a smoke test to check the draw of the chimney and make sure everything is behaving as it should.

And before we leave, everything is cleaned up and a certificate is issued for the sweep.

💡 Here's the important bit...
A chimney sweep isn't simply about removing soot.

It's also an opportunity to check, test and reassure.

You should know what we've done, whether we've found anything that needs attention, and have the peace of mind that your chimney is ready for use.
🙂

If you've never had a chimney swept before, there's no need to feel unsure about what to expect.

We're always happy to explain the process and answer any questions before we start

🍂Can't remember your last chimney sweep?

One of the things we hear surprisingly often is that people simply aren't sure when their chimney was last swept.

It's easy to lose track. Life gets busy, another year passes, and before you know it you're thinking about lighting the fire again.

The honest answer is that there isn't one rule for every home.

The recommended sweeping frequency depends on the type of appliance you have, how often it's used and what fuel you're burning.

For example, a wood-burning stove that's used regularly will usually need sweeping more often than a gas appliance.

💡 The important thing isn't trying to remember every recommendation—it's simply knowing when your chimney was last swept.

If you can't quite remember, now is a good time to check before autumn arrives.

🙂 If you're unsure what applies to your fireplace or stove, we're always happy to help.

One minute it's warm evenings and summer holidays.

The next, the mornings feel a little cooler and everyone starts thinking about lighting the fire again.

Every year we notice the same thing. As soon as the weather begins to change, the phone gets much busier with people wanting their chimney swept before using their fireplace or log burner for the first time.

That's exactly why we're starting our Get Ready for Autumn series now.

Not because we want to rush summer along, but because a little planning now makes the change of season much easier.

💡 Here's why it matters...
There's nothing wrong with waiting until autumn, but booking a little earlier often means you have more choice of appointment times and the reassurance that everything is ready before you need it.

It's one less thing to think about when the colder weather arrives.

🙂 If you're planning ahead for autumn, now is a great time to add your chimney to the list.

If you're not sure whether yours is due a sweep, we're always happy to help.

🧹 Worried chimney sweeping will make a mess?

It's one of the biggest concerns people have before booking a chimney sweep—and it's completely understandable.

The good news is that modern chimney sweeping is very different to what many people imagine.

Before Karl begins, he carefully prepares the area around your fireplace using specialist soot containment equipment, protective coverings and dust sheets to help keep your home clean and tidy throughout the visit.

One of the nicest compliments we regularly receive is:
"I had no idea it would be so clean and tidy."

If you've never had your chimney swept before, we've recently created a new 'What to Expect' guide on our website that explains every stage of the visit—from the moment Karl arrives outside your home to the moment your digital certificate arrives in your inbox.

We hope it helps make chimney sweeping feel a little less mysterious.

Cold character home? Don't sacrifice its charm.

One of the joys of older homes is their character—but they can sometimes be the hardest to heat.

Our customer wanted to modernise their fireplace as part of a home renovation while keeping the warmth and personality that made the room special.

The existing fireplace felt small and dated, so we created something with much more presence, giving the room a real focal point while significantly improving the way it heats the space.

The finished result is exactly what we love helping customers achieve: a fireplace that looks as though it has always belonged there, while providing the comfort and efficiency needed for everyday living.

If you're planning a renovation and wondering what's possible, we're always happy to offer honest advice and talk you through the options.

There's something special about a real open fire.

The sound.
The smell.
The dancing flames.

Our customer loved theirs and wanted to keep it exactly that way, rather than replace it with a log burner.

The challenge?

The chimney struggled to establish a good draw.

After assessing the chimney, we installed a steel liner, gather & closure plate, helping the chimney perform more efficiently while keeping the open fire they loved.

We loved their review:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"After numerous quotes from many companies, I'm glad we found Step In Time... Only Step In Time took a proactive approach and executed without further comment. They were also the most competitive. Would highly recommend."

Every chimney is different, so there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution.

If you'd like honest advice about getting the best from your open fire, we'd be happy to help.

Book now for the best availability!

All of our existing customers get an automated annual reminder for their sweep.

We've just changed the timings of this to be 2 months in advance rather than one.

Last year, we got incredibly busy from August onwards, and some customers were not able to have the appointment timing they wanted.

So if your sweep is due in September, your reminder is coming tomorrow!

Make the most of it and send us a message to book in:

You'll be surprised what we find in gas flues.

Because gas burns cleanly, many people assume their chimney doesn't need any maintenance. As a result, it's not uncommon for us to attend gas fires that haven't been swept for many years.

This creates A LOT of soot.

Another sad, yet common occurance, is dead birds. A lot of older gas terminals don't have cowls fitted, making them an attractive place for birds to investigate. Unfortunately, not all of them find their way back out...

It's like a scene from Radiohead's Street Spirit 🥹!

Not only is it a terrible way for an animal to die, any obstruction in a flue can affect how safely and efficiently your appliance operates.

An annual sweep allows us to check for:

• Bird activity and nesting material
• Obstructions within the flue
• Damage or deterioration
• General safe operation of the chimney

If you've got a gas fire and can't remember the last time the chimney was swept, it's worth adding it to the to-do list.

What's your favourite?!

Fireplaces come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and there's usually a stove to fit!

As part of our installation service we will recommend a range of log burners for you to choose from, based on the space you have available (fireplace dimensions, and the size of your room).

We can also install new hearths, surrounds, beams, chamber boarding and brick slips.

One of our most favourites was the fantastic transformation for the Hobbit SE install, complete with stunning burnt orange gloss porcelain tiles from Mandarin Stone to match the stove's brass fittings.

Did you know we also do commercial work?

In addition to our domestic customers, we have a number of commercial customers too. These are typically construction companies and estate agents.

This current project in slinfold is a full house renovation, including 5 liner and log burner installations, 10 sweeps, and 2 bird's nest removals.

We often do work in stages, so the liners are in, and the log burners will follow in the Autumn. We look forward to the finished pics!
