Helium Quench Pipe Project | St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping

Another successful MRI project delivered by the ICE team 👷‍♂️💨

Working alongside DPL Group Ltd, we were appointed to design, manufacture, and install the complete helium quench pipe system for a new Siemens Altea 1.5T MRI scanner at St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping.

A helium quench pipe is a vital safety system within any MRI suite, providing a controlled discharge path for helium gas in the event of a magnet quench. It protects patients, staff, and equipment, so precision and compliance are absolutely critical.

Our scope covered every stage, from site survey, design, and pressure-drop calculations through to fabrication and installation.

The finished system included:
🔹 200 mm dia × 3 mm 304 stainless-steel quench pipe
🔹 Painted mild-steel support brackets
🔹 50 mm foil-backed insulation
🔹 1 mm aluminium stucco cladding for external sections
🔹 Silicone-rubber gaskets for airtight performance

The site presented several challenges — including a raised plant deck, fire exits, and occupied areas near the discharge point, but our engineers reconfigured the layout and recalculated the system to ensure full manufacturer compliance and safety.

Delivered in two phases (internal and external works), the installation was completed on time, fully approved, and ready for scanner commissioning, keeping the hospital’s tight schedule on track.

At ICE, we remove the complexity from MRI installations by providing a complete turnkey service, combining design, engineering, and installation expertise under one roof.

The result is a safe, compliant, and stress-free process for our clients.

Future-proof Pharmaceutical Refrigeration: ICE Ltd upgrades a critical airlock system with ultra-low GWP refrigerant.

A Pharma client in North Wales entrusted ICE Ltd to replace a vital airlock refrigeration system serving their freezer facility. Although the airlock doesn’t store product, its operation is critical as failure could compromise the main freezer.

ICE designed and installed a 5.11 kW DX (direct expansion) system using R454C (A2L) refrigerant, delivering modern, compliant, and future-ready cooling while minimising environmental impact.

Key outcomes:

✅ Regulatory compliance: R454C has a GWP < 150, aligning with present and future F-Gas phase-down rules
Industrial Cooling Equipment Ltd

✅ Safety-first design: Mandatory leak detection system in place because of R454C’s A2L (mildly flammable) status
Industrial Cooling Equipment Ltd

✅ Reliable performance: High-efficiency Danfoss condensing unit & Kelvion evaporator ensures robust, steady cooling
Industrial Cooling Equipment Ltd

✅ Handover: Full regulatory documentation (including PED certification) handed over; zero disruption during switchover

✅ Long-term value: The upgrade secures the airlock system for the long term, without the risk of future refrigerant bans or obsolescence

If you’re looking to upgrade your refrigeration plant, transition to low-GWP refrigerants, or future-proof critical temperature-controlled environments, ICE Ltd is ready to help.

ICE Ltd received Highly Commended in the Refrigeration Project of the Year category at the ACR & Heat Pump Awards 2026.

Selected from a shortlist of five finalists, the project involved the upgrade of a pharmaceutical cold room facility, protecting over £40 million worth of temperature-sensitive stock whilst implementing low-GWP A2L refrigerants and maintaining strict temperature compliance throughout the works.

This was a true team effort from start to finish.

The project was designed by Nick Griffiths, Project Managed by Lee Hopkins & Daniel Bush, installed by Daniel Bush and Samuel Jones, and commissioned by Harry James and Sam Griffiths.

Projects such as this demonstrate the strength of our team and our ability to deliver technically demanding refrigeration solutions in highly regulated environments.

☀️ Kitchen Extension Too Hot to Use?

Large areas of glazing, bi-fold doors and roof lanterns look fantastic, but they can create a real challenge when it comes to temperature control.

This Cheshire kitchen extension was suffering from excessive solar gain, making the space uncomfortable during warmer weather and difficult to enjoy as intended.

Check out how we overcame the problem with a carefully designed air conditioning solution that not only delivered the cooling performance required but also complemented the high-end finish of the room.

The selected system provides:

✅ Effective cooling during hot weather
✅ Energy-efficient heating in winter
✅ Low noise operation
✅ A stylish finish that blends into the interior design
✅ Year-round comfort for the homeowner

Modern air conditioning isn't just for commercial buildings. It's becoming an increasingly popular solution for kitchen extensions, garden rooms and open-plan living spaces where overheating is a common issue.

Have you completed an extension only to find it's too hot in summer and too cold in winter?

05/06/2026

A single refrigeration failure can result in thousands of pounds worth of stock being lost, not to mention operational disruption and compliance issues.

What measures do you have in place to protect your cold storage operation?

Coldroom gone down? What to do should you do to preserve stock?

People often think air conditioning and refrigeration companies only get busy when it’s hot.

The reality is… we’re busy all year round.

What hot weather does do is expose every system that hasn’t been maintained properly or recommendations/quotes for works that haven't been acted upon.

Filters blocked.
Condensers clogged.
Refrigerant issues.
Failed fans.
Systems already struggling before the temperatures even rise.

Then suddenly every breakdown becomes urgent at the exact same time.

Over the last few days our engineers have been covering everything from comfort cooling breakdowns, water leaks through to pharmaceutical temperature-critical environments across the UK.

The pressure during weather like this isn’t really about the heat itself.
It’s about trying to respond quickly whilst making sure the genuinely critical sites stay operational.

That’s why preventative maintenance matters.

Not because it stops every breakdown..... it won’t.

But because well maintained systems:
🧊 Fail less
🧊 Recover quicker
🧊 Run more efficiently
🧊 And are far less likely to collapse during peak demand

A lot of the work we do isn’t glamorous.
It’s engineers on motorways at midnight.
Fault finding in plantrooms.
Getting disturbed on bank holidays
Trying to keep warehouses, production facilities and pharma environments operational while everyone else is at home enjoying the sunshine.

Big thanks to all of our team for the effort over the last week 👏

Shout out to our on-call engineer Luc over the bank holiday 👏

A busy one with multiple critical call outs across the country.

First attending a pharmaceutical site in North Wales, getting 3 systems back online after HP faults and helping stabilise temperatures on site.

Then straight back out again to a pharmaceutical site in Redditch dealing with temperature issues.

Long hours, plenty of driving, pressure from all sides and still getting the job done professionally.

This is the side of the industry people don’t always see during warmer weather. Keeping critical environments operational isn’t just about comfort cooling for some customers it’s business critical.

Good effort Luc 👍

Before and after shots from a recent air conditioning maintenance visit at a waste management facility in Cheshire 📸

Sites like these can be particularly harsh environments for air conditioning systems, with high levels of dust and debris causing systems to become heavily soiled over time. Without regular maintenance, this can quickly impact efficiency, reliability, and overall system lifespan.

Our engineers carried out a full clean and maintenance service to help keep the systems operating efficiently and reduce the risk of breakdowns heading into the warmer months.

Regular maintenance is key, especially in more demanding industrial environments like this one 👌
