🏛️ Throwback to restoration work carried out in 2020 at Pett Church.

A number of repairs and replacements were undertaken to help make the church safe and watertight. These photos show the replacement hood mould and tracery panel, which we carefully carved from natural Bath stone. 🪨🔨

The original damaged hood mould and tracery panel were cut out of the building before the new replacement was secured into position. 🏗️

You’ll also notice at the bottom of the installed hood mould and tracery panel are new square label stops. Decorative carving was not carried out at the time due to budget constraints.

The primary functions of a hood mould are to act as a miniature roof, deflecting rainwater outward and away from the opening below, while also framing and highlighting the shape of the window or door arch. 🌧️⛪

🏛️ Another example of our restoration work — Stucco.

Stucco is a construction material made from aggregates, a binder and water. It is applied wet before hardening to form a very dense, solid finish.

In some modern applications, cements, mastics and epoxy resins are also used, particularly for specialist work such as stone cladding, cornice and string work. 🪨🔨

Metal fixings can range from simple dowels and cramps to specialist single-application fixings, depending on the requirements of the work.

The precise tolerances needed when carrying out this type of work make it a highly skilled craft, requiring accuracy, experience and attention to detail. 👷‍♂️📐

A recently completed Yorkstone step project in Greenwich. 🪨

We templated, crafted and installed this impressive flight of eight treads and risers, along with a large landing area, using natural Yorkstone sandstone. Each tread was hand-finished at our East Sussex workshop to a substantial 50mm thickness, featuring a full bullnose front edge and a rubbed finish to enhance the stone's natural character.

The installation was completed using traditional lime mortar techniques—even during the recent heatwave! The result is a durable, timeless set of steps that showcases the beauty and craftsmanship of natural stone.

Client Memorial piece💫🪨

Our client asked us to create a four-sided Portland limestone memorial with a plinth and a four-weathered pyramidal top.

Its form makes it very different from the standard headstone shape and proportions.
Great care was taken to ensure the pyramidal top was perfectly accurate, achieving clean lines and the correct overall symmetry.

Photos include the original block, work in progress and after our installation.
