Fitting a guard to a chimney from a cherry picker.

The mesh cage sits over the top of the chimney so birds can't get down it. Jackdaws and pigeons both nest in chimneys, and a nest in a flue blocks it.

Sheds and decking give rats somewhere dry to live. As it gets colder and there's less food about outside, the ones living in the garden start looking at the house.

Two things help. Keep bird food off the ground, and block any gaps around pipes where they go through the wall.

Badgers did this to a lawn.

They roll the turf back to get at the worms and grubs underneath. A lawn with plenty of chafer grubs or leatherjackets in it will bring them back night after night.

Badgers and their setts are protected by law, so they can't be trapped or harmed. What can be done is dealing with the grubs they're coming for and making it harder for them to get into the garden.

Chimneys that aren't used suit bees because they're dry and sheltered.

We don't treat honey bees as a first resort. We work with local beekeepers and look at every other option first.

We're looking for a pest controller to join our team in Saffron Walden. It's a short-term contract to start with, and it could become permanent.

You don't need years in the trade. We'd like to hear from experienced pest controllers and from people starting out, and we'll give the right person full training.

The work is mainly rodent control. You'd make regular routine visits to our established clients' sites, carry out inspections and treatments, and keep a clear record of each visit.

What you get:

• Competitive salary, depending on experience
• 8am to 4pm, with overtime available
• Company vehicle for work
• Full training, whatever your experience

You'll need to be reliable, good with customers and professional on clients' sites. You'll also need a full, clean UK driving licence.

Loft, camera, action.

This is a loft at night. The rat is on the left, sitting on top of the insulation.

A camera left in a loft overnight shows what the animal is and where it's getting in. That matters because rats and squirrels are dealt with differently, and the noises sound much the same from the room below.

This wasp nest was under a bed.

It's built on to the underside of the bed base, on top of a bag that had been stored there.

Most nests we see are in lofts and sheds. A quiet spare room does just as well if the wasps can get in. They build with chewed wood, which is why a nest looks like layers of paper.

Nests die off once the weather turns cold, but until then the wasps are still in there. If you find one, leave it alone and ring 01799 542505.

Watch the washing machine on the right.

That's a rat going up the side of it towards the worktop. Rats jump and climb far better than most people expect, which is how droppings end up on worktops and not only on the floor.
