Hertfordshire and the eastern counties seem to have missed any rain - and whilst the forecast is to become cooler , you need to consider watering your lawn Lawns that are in the sun all day – South facing are likely to dry up quicker than lawns which that are North facing and in the shade for most of the day.

• You will never keep up with the loss of water of the summer, but you can help by applying enough to give a thorough soaking every now and again.
• Water at night, this will reduce the losses from evaporation and allow the water to soak in.
• Give a good soaking once a week rather than little than often, but recognize how quickly your soil can absorb it – a light soft sprinkle over a long period is the best.
• Use a sprinkler and put your rain gauge in place and record how much you apply over a 30 minute period.
• Note the direction of the wind , move the sprinkler around to avoid dry patches where wind direction changed.

Finally avoid cutting the grass too short leave it long so it is not struggling to make new growth.
We have a number of treatments that can help reduce lawn stress from dry weather .

W**d grasses - I see a lot of w**d grasses in new turf, turf growers are often using land that has had cereals growing on it and with in that they will have w**d grasses . Farmers don’t want w**d grasses but they have no w**d killers to keep them out as most have been taken of the market for environmental reasons and so they continue to exist in the soil. Turf growers also can do nothing about them – and weather conditions over the last 18 months with high rain fall have made it difficult to eradicate w**d grasses just by cultivations before sowing the seed. It can take longer but I would recommend establishing a lawn from seed. Failing that you need to dig them out or we can use a special tool that helps cut them back they always look worse as we head to middle of the year as they are trying to seed - after 21st June they will stop trying to seed and will not look so bad. How to Level a Lumpy Lawn

What’s your idea of lawn perfection? We’re guessing it doesn’t involve lumps, bumps or big holes. In our step-by-step guide to levelling a lumpy lawn, we’ll explain how to smooth out the surface of your sward to make using and caring for your lawn far more pleasurable.

• Identify what’s causing your lawn to look lumpy

• Decide whether you can make repairs by carrying out renovation, or if it would be better to start again and re-level the surface to create a new lawn from turf or seed.

• Work out what materials you need to buy to mend your lawn

• Prepare the lawn for repair works

• Use screened topsoil to fill the hollows

• Overseed the area

• Irrigate if necessary

• Adopt a regular lawn care regime while your newly mended lawn settles down

Or give me a call and I will sort it
