The Mystery of the Endless Gas Pipe
Most gas inspections follow a familiar pattern. This one started with a pipe that seemed determined to go nowhere—and everywhere at once.
It was just another Friday morning for the Natgas team. Armed with a gas detector, a flask of tea, and the optimism that today might finally be straightforward, Conni arrived at a property to carry out a routine inspection.
The homeowner greeted him with confidence.
“Everything’s fine here,” they said. “The previous engineer sorted all the gas work years ago.”
Conni smiled politely. Experience had taught him that those words usually meant he was about to discover something interesting.
First came the boiler cupboard. Fine.
Then the kitchen. Fine.
Then a strange pipe sticking out from behind a cabinet.
“What’s that connected to?” Conni asked.
The homeowner shrugged.
“No idea. It’s always been there.”
Conni traced the pipe. It disappeared through a wall, reappeared in a utility room, crossed a ceiling void, and finally emerged in what looked like a former home bar.
At the end of the pipe was… nothing.

The following property was even better. An uncapped pipe hidden behind a wardrobe.
The next one had three redundant pipes, one painted the same colour as the wall as if someone thought camouflage was an acceptable gas safety measure.

“Five,” said one engineer.
“Seven,” said another.
A veteran engineer looked up from his paperwork.
“Double figures. Detached house. Built in the seventies.”
He was right.
Everyone laughed, but beneath the humour lies a serious issue.
