Kitchen Extension | Carlisle Avenue ➡️ Basement . Extension . Full House Refurbishment

👀 Filled with light, this stunning newly refurbished kitchen sits at the heart of a five-bedroom, four-bathroom St Albans family home.
➡️A space designed not just to be seen, but to gather, cook, and make memories in.

🏗️ We excavated beneath the original property to create a full-length basement, added a single-storey rear extension, and carried out a full refurbishment throughout.

With the new basement, this growing family has all the breathing room they need. Aside from a comfy double bedroom, a family bathroom, and a utility room, there’s a big open space that really does it all.
➡️Serving as a second living area, home office, playroom, and gym.

On the ground floor, a new open-plan kitchen and dining space opens directly onto the rear garden ☀️🏡 Front and rear light wells bring natural daylight into the new lower level, creating a basement that feels bright, open, and fully connected to the rest of the house.

Green Belt constraints are driving a new era of basement construction.

Across areas like St Albans and the wider Home Counties, Green Belt policy continues to shape one of the most interesting shifts in residential architecture today.

With strict protections designed to prevent urban sprawl, outward expansion is often heavily restricted. Extensions that significantly alter footprint can face resistance, even when a home sits on generous private land.🌱

So homeowners and architects are increasingly asking our team a different question:

If we can’t build out…can we build down?⬇

That’s where basement construction become the strategic design response, and one we are undertaking more and more across these regions.

🌱Where Green Belt or local planning policy limits outward development, excavation beneath an existing footprint can offer a way to unlock space without increasing visible bulk or affecting the openness of the landscape.

Preserving the appearance and openness of the Green Belt while allowing homes to adapt internally.

We delivered the substructure works ready for the client’s new timber frame home to sit above. Working closely with the design team to deliver the basement shell for future use, including a golf simulator tucked within the lower level.

In many cases, “building down” is becoming the most considered response to Green Belt constraint.

Period Home Transformation | St Albans
➡️ Basement . Extension . Full House Refurbishment

👀Take a look at how our team transformed this period townhouse in the heart of St Albans into a carefully reconfigured five-bedroom family home.

🏗️We excavated beneath the original property, added a rear extension, and fully refurbished the house throughout.

Designed to bring in more natural light and improve the flow of the house, the transformation balances contemporary living with the character of the original property. Large rear Crittall doors flood the kitchen space with natural light and open directly onto the landscaped garden, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor setting designed for entertaining, everyday living, and long summer evenings ☀️🏡

Waiting until summer to start. By then, everyone else has the same idea.

Most homeowners think summer is the best time to start a basement build…
But in our experience, spring always wins, here’s why.

🌱In early summer, demand across the industry naturally increases, which can make lead times more competitive.
🌱 Ground conditions are far more stable after winter, slightly moist and not as dry or hard as in summer. Making excavation and structural work smoother and more efficient.
🌱 Conditions are more predictable
🌱Longer days allow for steady, consistent progress on site.
🌱 Begin in spring, and your basement or home renovation is often ready by Christmas…Ready to host and share with your family & friends.

Most basement projects that begin now are ready in time for Christmas. Not as a last-minute scramble, but as a fully realised space you can actually enjoy.

And while others are just getting started in summer, you’re already stepping into something complete.

If a basement or full home renovation has been on your mind, this is the moment that gives you the most control, the best pace, and the strongest outcome.

Join Liam for a peek at the plans and progress taking shape at our Waverly Road project in St Albans.

During the process we needed to make one or two amendments to our original design….

We’ll show you that next time👀…It’s a change that will make all the difference.

The truth? It’s all in the design.

We don’t see basements as underground spaces...we see them as opportunities to bring light in from every angle.

• Light wells that draw daylight deep into the space
• Large windows that blur the boundary between inside and out
• Generous floor-to-ceiling heights that create an open, airy feel

Done right, a basement doesn’t feel like a basement at all...it can feel like the brightest room in the house.

Swipe through to see how our designs can flood your home with natural light.
