“My word is my bond.”

I went out to look at a job recently; can you take out the mortar in our patio (20m x 4m), you can use our tools, it comes out easily. . . .
So I go and look (as requested - on a Saturday), the injured husband is golfing
I talk through a plan of attack, explaining why, state that I will use my own power tools as those are not sufficient and that realistically it will take me two man days of effort (which I might as it is hard physical on your knees constantly) split over three days, but charge for 16hrs.
When can you do it? Well weather dependant and I have other commitments, but with the next fortnight it will be done. “I will speak to my husband and confirm”
“Agreed, please let us know when you can start”
So weather looking good for Wed/Thu this week and so I send the message in photo 6 and the reply is staggering!!
I am fortunate, part-time and underpinned by my Pensions, but late cancellations like cost two days loss of income and is really not good!!
Thanks “Lisa”, don’t ask again will you?

This was my reply to her, which I like to think is fair, I don’t ask much, but a little respect is always appreciated:

“I have never gone to a customers to work and suddenly thought; perhaps I’ll mow the lawn and trim the hedges first?
I certainly never start any job without first clarifying the requirements with the customer. . . .
Yes; you should have
1. Asked me when I was thinking of starting (we had agreed a window for this
2. Rang me with notice that you were going to break our “agreement”

Pause and have a think of this was reversed on you??
Really not impressed. . . .

A bit of “future proofing”
When labour is the most expensive element of your project; go the extra mile and use materiel that will last. . . . 😉
Because it makes no sense paying to redo the work again and again and let’s face it, none of us are getting any younger!!

I’m working in a customers garden on Wednesday evening when her husband came out and asked “does the gnome want a cup of tea”
Much laughter, then she snapped and forwarded this. . . . .
Is there anything better than being happy at work? Especially with a cup of strong tea one sugar!!

Many of my jobs start with an idea in a customers head, I then try to see the picture in their head and translate that to a sketch and we go from there.
This started as a new shed and a bit of trellis
I began by removing a lot of nettles, brambles, shrubs and removing, then containing massive bamboo, as you will see in the photo’s, it was a BIG transformation!! Being trusted and given a little “artistic license” always makes a job easier and certainly more enjoyable!
The video in the “Comments” below shows the finished job (for now), but it is going to look incredible when it is fully planted up and established - Watch this space!

April 2023:

Thankfully the neighbouring house for my latest fencing project was having just been purchased - having an extension built. The perfect time to redefine the boundary (I was digging out the original iron fence posts as I went) and make good with a new “quality” (Lewis Tyler’s) CloseBoard fence with concrete posts and sunken gravel boards.
See the post below this for the finished job. . . . .

The post above was the starting point for this fence and gate in Welwyn. The best bit about what I do is seeing the joy on the faces of the customer when the job exceeds their expectations!
Checkout my Video in the “Comments” below to see the B Side of the fence.
Another delighted customer. ;-)

March 2023:

Invited back to Church Crescent, St.Albans to put in another shared boundary fence; this time working around a stunning ornate fruit tree. . . . .
Photo’s of the finished job in the comments below.
Fencing is an Olympic sport, on the basis of this job, I should be representing GB!
