Shoulder-barging a door that closed fine all winter? You are not imagining it. Timber absorbs moisture from humid summer air and swells just enough to bind in the frame, and loose hinge screws let the door sag and catch at the top corner. It is the most common joinery callout we get in St Helens every June.

The proper fix takes under an hour per door: tighten or repair the hinges, plane the binding edge, then seal the bare timber so it cannot swell again next year. That last step is the one most DIY fixes miss. Doors with splits, rot, or delaminating faces are better replaced, and we will tell you honestly which yours needs. A house full of sticking doors is usually sorted in one morning, typically well under £100 per door.

A garden room is one of the few home improvements you can have designed, built, and in use within a month. Home office, gym, craft room, or teenage den: a properly insulated timber garden room works all year round, not just in summer.

Most garden rooms need no planning permission under permitted development rules, as long as they stay single storey and under 2.5 metres near a boundary. Honest numbers: a basic insulated room of around nine square metres usually lands between £9,000 and £14,000 fully built with electrics, and larger rooms with partitions or a kitchenette sit between £16,000 and £25,000. Cheap kits cost less for a reason, with thin framing and felt roofs that fail within a decade. A properly framed build should give you 25 years or more.

We design, build, and fit garden rooms across St Helens and Merseyside, and June is the ideal time to build.

Well-maintained external timber lasts 60 years or more. Neglected softwood can fail in under ten. The difference? A few hours each summer, and late June is the ideal window for the work.

Our summer checklist: inspect fascias and soffits for staining and soft timber (usually a leaking gutter is to blame), thumbnail-test window sills and door frames for early rot, check gates for drop and post decay, then recoat anything dull, cracked, or flaking while the timber is warm and dry. Localised rot rarely means replacement: a joiner can splice in new timber or use resin repairs at a fraction of the cost of new windows. The honest rule: if more than a third of a board or frame is gone, replace; otherwise repair.

We repair and make external joinery across St Helens and Merseyside, and we will always tell you straight which option is better value.

Tired internal doors drag a whole house down. Yellowing veneer panels from the 90s, hollow-core flats that flex when you close them, mismatched handles in every room — it's the kind of thing you stop noticing until a friend points it out, and then you can't unsee it.

New internal doors are one of the cheapest meaningful upgrades you can make to a home. For a three-bed semi with eight doors, oak veneered Shaker at around £130 each, quality hinges and handles, planed and hung properly: total around £1,800 fitted and finished. Solid oak with premium hardware sits at £2,500–£3,200. Painted Shaker doors with original-style architraves drops it to around £1,500.

Fire-rated doors where building regs require them, sensible advice on materials, clean work room by room.

Decking is the kind of job that looks simple from the outside and goes wrong in ways most homeowners never see. Posts not set deep enough, joists too far apart, drainage grooves laid the wrong way up. A year or two later the deck starts to flex, screws back out, and what should have been a 20-year garden feature becomes a tripping hazard..
We've built and replaced enough decking across St Helens and Merseyside to know where the corners get cut. Softwood for sensible budgets (12–15 years with proper maintenance), hardwood for a deck that lasts 25 years or more with very little intervention, or composite if you want to leave it alone entirely. Whatever material you choose, the frame underneath needs posts set in concrete to 600mm, joists at the right centres for the boards, and proper ground clearance for airflow.

Honest pricing, clean work, no pressure. A typical 20m² deck lands between £2,800 and £10,000 depending on materials.

Flooring is one of the biggest decisions in any home renovation, and the answer genuinely isn't the same for every room....

Flooring is one of the biggest decisions in any home renovation, and the answer genuinely isn't the same for every room. Solid oak in a busy kitchen full of muddy boots and water spills ages badly. Laminate in a formal living room undersells the rest of the work. Engineered wood is the right call eight times out of ten — but not always.

Solid wood for traditional living rooms on timber subfloors. Engineered oak for kitchens, modern extensions and anywhere with underfloor heating (it doesn't warp the way solid wood does). Quality laminate where the budget needs to stretch and the look still matters. LVT for utility rooms and downstairs WCs where water-resistance is non-negotiable.

Honest fitted prices for a 25m² room: laminate £35–£55/m², engineered oak £65–£95/m², solid or premium engineered £95–£140/m², LVT £55–£85/m². Subfloor prep included where it's needed.

Summer changes the way a kitchen works. The back doors are open, friends drift in from the garden, and dinner ends up being three small meals instead of one big one. If your layout isn't built for that — a hob in the corner, narrow worktops, no room to prep — you feel it the moment the weather warms up.

A bespoke kitchen is designed around how your household actually lives. For St Helens homes that usually means a clear route to the garden, a peninsula or island for people to gather round, and enough built-in storage so the surfaces stay clear when guests arrive. We design every kitchen in-house, then build and fit it ourselves. Quartz worktops, hand-painted Shaker doors, tall larders, proper extraction — every unit built to the millimetre of your room.

Free no-obligation visit, clear written prices, clean and respectful work from start to finish.

Most homes have more usable space than you think — it's just hidden behind awkward alcoves, chimney breasts, and corners that freestanding furniture can't fill properly.

Fitted wardrobes are designed around your room, not the other way around. Every millimetre is measured and built to fit, so there are no gaps, no wasted space, and no doors that catch on the bed.
