This older fuse board was tidy, but it still got changed for a modern consumer unit. Why is that?
Older fuse boards don’t offer the same amount of protection that a modern consumer unit does. For example automatic disconnection if a short circuit or overload was to happen, it disconnects a lot quicker and the switches make it easier to reset rather than having to put in a new fuse every time.
RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent) is the main difference here. It not only provides the standard overcurrent protection with automatic disconnection, it also includes built-in RCD (Residual Current Device) protection for every circuit which can disconnect the supply to protect against electric shock and certain types of wiring faults that would go undetected by a standard fuse.
This board also features an SPD (Surge Protection Device) to protect your installation against sudden inrushes of over-voltages caused by surges in the electrical grid or even lightning strikes.
