🎨 Dave's Salford Art Exhibition – Appeal for Easels
Hello everyone,

Some of you may already know — my Dad is holding an exhibition of his artwork and poetry celebrating Salford’s 100th birthday. His paintings capture Salford as he remembers it from his childhood, and we’re so excited to share them.

We’re in need of around 12 easels to display his work. They’ll only be required for a few weeks, and we’ll take great care of them.

This is Oliver’s 3rd week in proper work. He’s been in on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I always team him up with my dad. It’s an absolute joy watching the two of them working together side by side in the sunshine all day.

Jobs he’s taken on:
• Making tea ☕️
• Cleaning and organising work areas
• Keeping the whole site tidy
• Preparing surfaces ready for decoration
• Labouring with the plasterers — carrying boards and helping wherever needed
•Disappears to the shop for 2 hours
•Hiding in the porte loo on his phone
•Being caught on Snapchat all the time

Absolutely loved working alongside my son and my dad this week — the family work dynamics were something else 🤯! Oliver talking away a mile a minute, and then has to repeat himself because Grandad’s left his hearing aids at home 😂

Had a few positive messages asking about our Oliver in work over the last few days. 💙

He’s 12 now, and this summer is his first proper bit of work – after years of popping in, lending a hand and earning his pocket money doing cleaning and small jobs.

I’ve had the kids in and around a work environment since being about 5/ 6. Already doing the same with little Bill… and now our daughter’s decided she wants in on it too 😅 (I can already see it will be arguments as she's the wife reincarnation !).

It’s got me thinking about how we raised the little critters. I’m no helicopter parent – never have been.
I let them learn the hard way. There’s healthy competition in our house – winners and losers, because that’s life. P*** about, you find out. Climb things and you fall. They’ve been right there beside me and my wife every step of the way, along for the ride.

I truly believe it’s given them a head start on so many things.
We are not raising little boys and girls.
I’m raising good men and women – ready for whatever life throws their way. ✊

Salford grit, passed down.

Another reason is he's off school for 6 weeks and he can earn his own money for spends 😂

So incredibly proud of my dad, Dave Downing 🎨

Born 1947 in Hanky Park, Salford – a proper proud Salford man through and through.

Born at the end of the war, just 19 years old when England lifted the World Cup. He lived through the slum clearances across Salford and the surrounding areas, and carries every high and every low of those times with him still.

At 79 years young. To commemorate the Salford centenary year ’s holding his very first ever art exhibition.

For over 20 years he has poured his heart into recreating the streets of his childhood – Hanky Park and all the places he knows so well – bringing them to life in paintings and poetry. Every piece carries his deep, sentimental bond to his city, told through his own creativity.

Please keep your eyes peeled – I’ll be sharing the exhibition dates and location very soon!
