Call out to deal with a Black garden ant 🐜 issue at a domestic property!
🟢Black garden ants were emerging in large numbers from cracks/crevices in the skirting boards and architraves in several areas inside the property causing discomfort for the homeowners. SLR Pest Management was able to deal with the issue so that the homeowner could continue using their home without the discomfort of thousands of ants emerging into the rooms!
🟢The ant colony was in the process of reproduction, also known a nuptial flight which is how the the ants reproduce and establish new colonies. The larger winged ants known as alates are the sexually mature virgin queens, and males known as drones.
🟢 After the ants have successfully mated, the male flying ant dies and the fertile queen locates a new place to start a new colony and starts building a new nest. The new queen then sheds her wings and spends the rest of her life wingless. She will then lay her first batch of eggs, looking after the young until they develop into workers. From then on, her sole purpose is to keep laying eggs for the colony, whilst the workers take on the rest of the duties of the colony such as looking after the young, foraging for food and expanding the nest.
🟢 Black garden ants swarm on hot, humid, and still summer days so they can mate mid-air. They swarm in massive numbers as this increases the chances of successful mating and helps to ensure that some of the ants avoid predation from predators such as birds. Flying ant season in the UK typically spans from late June to mid August, peaking in mid to late July. The exact timing varies across the UK depending on local weather conditions.
