Work in Progress - Orpington

The first part of this job in Orpington was to remove the old crazy paving driveway in front of the house.
A lorry then came to collect the excavated driveway and remove.
Following on from this, MOT Type 1 was delivered and then spread over and compacted onto the excavated area.

A Springtime Visit to lift your spirits!!

The long awaited Spring months can sometimes still be dreary and chilly and the colours of Summer still seem a long way off.
If you want somewhere to visit which will fill you with a new lease of life and “wow you” with beautiful early colours and inspiration, where better to visit than the Tulip Festival at Pashley Manor Gardens on the borders of Sussex and Kent.
The gardens have been planted with over 40,000 tulip bulbs of over 100 different varieties, in themed gardens and pots and planters throughout the garden to create many truly beautiful displays. If you see a particular tulip or two that you would like to have in your own garden, you can also order specific varieties to be delivered to your door for the Autumn, for you to plant for next Spring.
It runs from late April to early May but it is best to check specific dates a bit nearer the time as the exact flowering times of the tulips is somewhat governed by the weather conditions and temperature at that time of year, and may come slightly early or slightly later depending. Enjoy!

Snowdrops - The first floral jewels of Spring

When winter seems to be dragging its heels and Spring and Summer seem a distant memory, and an even more distant joy to come, Snowdrops are one of the very first flowers to bloom. They can be seen poking their tiny heads above the surface as early as late January when snow is still on the ground, right through to the end of March and are a most welcome sign of new life for a new year. There are so many different varieties, but here are just a few to bring some winter cheer.

Galanthus ‘Atkinsii’
Galanthus ‘Atkinsii’ is one of the oldest snowdrop varieties. Sturdy and wind resistant, one of the first Snowdrops to bloom.

Galanthus ‘Flore Pleno’ (Double Snowdrop)
Multiple layers of white petals with green markings on the inner petals that emphasize its intricate detail and beauty.

Galanthus ‘Hippolyta’
Named after the Amazonian Queen, Galanthus ‘Hippolyta’ is a double-flowered beauty with symmetrical layers of white petals, and delicate green markings on the inner layers, creating a striking visual contrast. Well suited for containers to create a stunning centrepiece.

Galanthus ‘Trym’
Known for its striking green streaks, its outer petals bear striking green markings that echo the patterns typically found on the inner petals. A very upright variety which suits mixed planting well.

Christmas Wreath Ideas
There are many different and unusual types of wreaths that you can make yourself to bring that varied and personal touch to your front door display for Christmas.
You could always try making a living wreath with small plants. You can use plants such as Sempervivums, Succulants and Sedums, or how about a herb wreath, made using herbs such as Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary and Sage.
Another fun idea is to make a wreath using brussel sprouts, peppers, chillies and onions. For a cool and wintery theme, try using greys and whites in your choice of foliage such as Euonymus and Eucalyptus with Snow Berries and variegated Holly to name but a few.
If you choose one of the above, it will certainly add that interesting wow factor to any front door. Happy holidays!

Spring colour for your garden

A sure way of adding a much needed bit of colour into your garden in the Spring is to plant some bulbs in the Autumn. At a time of year when the Summer seems so far away, they can add a breath of fresh air and lift your spirits with a beautiful splash of colour.

Hyacinths are one of the best statement pieces when it comes to big and bold early colour, and planting them with the smaller Grape Hyacinths or winter/spring flowering pansies or violas can give a pretty display of colours which complement each other.

Daffodils are available in many different varieties and mixing and matching can create a vibrant display. Teaming these with certain varieties of tulips can also look stunning but be careful to make sure their flowering times coincide in some way as a lot of tulips tend to flower later. Some like to plant bulbs which flower in succession so as one type finishes, another type is just coming into flower.

Choosing a real mix of colours which you may not think would look good, sometimes gives a beautiful display, such as peaches, yellows and purples.

Whatever you choose it will be sure to bring a much-needed splash of colour to any garden or patio at what can be a very cold and colourless time of year.
