Chimney Pot & Flaunching Maintenance 👇🏼

This chimney required a full rebuild at the top due to heavy vegetation growth around the chimney top and pots, which had caused cracking and allowed rainwater to enter the structure.

We carried out the necessary work to restore the chimney, including rebuilding the affected areas and completing the flaunching around the pots.

Cracks in a chimney stack can develop for several reasons, and they shouldn't always be dismissed as cosmetic.

Some common causes include:
• Weather exposure – Chimneys are constantly exposed to wind, rain and changing temperatures, which can gradually weaken brickwork and mortar.

• Frost damage – Water can enter small cracks and freeze, expanding and putting pressure on the surrounding masonry.

• Deteriorating mortar – As pointing breaks down, the chimney can become more vulnerable to movement and water pe*******on.

• Movement – Settlement or movement within the building can sometimes cause cracking around the chimney stack.

• Age – Older chimney stacks may naturally deteriorate over time, particularly if they haven't been maintained.

Small cracks can become larger problems if water continues to get into the masonry, so it's worth getting them assessed rather than simply covering them up.
