Jammed Union Monarch “Everest” locking mechanism repaired for a customer in Greenhill who was unable to close and lock their door on a Sunday morning.

Contender for most challenging job of the year so far….. and we’re only in May! 😁
When our customer wanted an ancient and obsolete horizontal mortice lock replacing with a more modern and secure version, we had to think outside of the box.
As the door was going to be stripped and painted, we had the option of installing a cylinder style mortice lock, elevating the looks and boosting the security at the same time. Plus if the lock ever needs changing in the future fit any reason, it’ll certainly be a lot more straightforward!

Seen some sights in my 30+ years as a locksmith, but finding this vintage Chubb 3G110 lock (bent and damaged after the builders tried to screw the door shut from the inside before checking it was in the way!) is certainly up there with the most bizarre!
Bit of a mission getting it out of the door (with a screw broken through the middle of it!) but I love a challenge, and this certainly provided one.

Beautiful original door in Totley upgraded to current insurance requirements for a final exit door.
The customer phoned us after recently moving into the property and found that the door was swollen in the frame and difficult to open and close. Also, it was only secured by a Yale type night latch lock (which had also been painted over from the outside!)
Door planed to ensure a correct fit and ease of operation, new Yale brasslux lock case and cylinder fitted, along with a BS3621:2007 compliant mortice lock and hinge bolts.

Saturday morning emergency call out to help one of our lovely customers in Greystones , who was unable to open their back door after the key wind locking mechanism failed.
The door was installed over 30 years ago, and had been tricky to operate for a few weeks. The problem with these locks when they fail is that due to the key operating the whole locking mechanism, rather than a full lift of the handle, when teeth snap off in the cog gearing system, they become either jammed or the mechanism slips and resets in the wrong position.
We’ve been opening these types of door locks for over 30 years, so there aren’t many that we haven’t had to deal with.
Door opened quickly and non-destructively, new locking mechanism installed, and door and plates realigned to help make future lock operation as easy and smooth as possible.

Not all Locksmiths are created equal…😬😬
We were called out by a customer in Whirlowdale , who was concerned about the security and state of their front door after calling a “Locksmith” when they locked themselves out recently.
Not only did they immediately try to drill out the perfectly good cylinder lock, but they removed the lock cover plate on the inside of the door(??) and fitted a very basic and totally incorrect sized euro cylinder in its place!
We supplied and fitted a custom built AP 3* Diamond Grade to the correct width of the door, in a matching sleek Matt Black finish, and installed new black concealed fixing plates.
Such a stylish and beautiful door should never have been treated as badly as this, and it was a pleasure to restore it to its original glory!!
🛑 Always check exactly who you are calling when searching through Google ads….. these rogue companies seem to hide amongst the top sponsored listings and adverts.
🛑 Always read through the reviews…. Lots of companies offer fake positive reviews, but they are usually easy to spot due to bad grammar/spelling mistakes and rarely make sense!
🛑 Always ask for a quote wherever possible. Although it’s difficult to give an exact price without seeing the job, a guide price should always be given, and try to send over photos which helps to narrow down what is required and help to give a more accurate quote.
🛑 All genuine locksmiths will attempt to gain entry non-destructively before drilling any locks….. if you are told that they need to drill it out without seeing the lock, it’s a massive red flag! 🚩

An all-to-common problem for one of our customers in Manor …..
Less than 2 years after having an Ultion 3* cylinder fitted to their flat door, they came home and found that they couldn’t get back in, as the lock had failed and jammed in the secure position. Even though they had the key, they couldn’t fully insert it into the lock!
We opened and removed the faulty lock, and replaced it with a beautifully smooth and reliable AP 3* diamond grade cylinder, backed by a 10 year warranty and £2,500 anti snap guarantee.

Jammed mortice lock opened and replaced in Nether Edge for a landlord whose tenants couldn’t open their door.
Locks certainly aren’t made to last like they used to be, and ERA mortice locks seem to have a very short lifespan!
We always fit Union Strongbolt locks whenever replacing these, as they offer better build quality and less future problems than their ERA counterparts. 🔑🔑🔑🔑🔑
