In hard water areas, every time water is heated, there's a potential for dissolved calcium and magnesium salts to contribute to scale formation.
Over time, limescale can accumulate on heat transfer surfaces, restricting heat transfer and forcing heating equipment to work harder to deliver the same results.
For installers, it's worth remembering that limescale and magnetite are two very different forms of contamination, and protecting against one doesn't mean you're protecting against the other.
Magnetic filters capture circulating ferrous corrosion debris, but they won't prevent limescale forming from dissolved minerals.
Electrolytic scale reducers, such as the BoilerMag ESR, take a different approach. They're designed to help reduce the formation of hard, adherent scale without adding chemicals to the water or requiring an electrical supply.
They don't soften water or remove the minerals responsible for hardness, making it important to understand where and how they're best applied.
