Some of the new buildings in Sheffield city centre are good but let’s not forget some of the older buildings.

I visited Sheffield City Hall a few weeks ago for my daughters dance show and I always love seeing the interiors, but I’ve never bothered to take a photo, until now. Some really nice intricate painted interiors, in my opinion.

Sheffield City Hall was opened in 1932, 12 years after the design was prepared by architect Vincent E. Harris who designed lots of government offices, schools and residential schemes in major cities around the UK. The architectural style is probably ā€˜classical revival’. The stone apparently came from Darley Dale, which isn’t that far away. Construction was delayed by a few years because of the economic climate of the early 1920’s. The total cost back then was about Ā£500k. Not sure how much it’s valued for at the moment but probably several Ā£m. Apparently it had cutting edge mechanical ventilation [air con] at the time of construction.

It's still hosting global artists and bands; and also provides a great venue for local and community events, such as my daughters show.

Sheffield City Hall is still standing strong, nearly a hundred years later and several world wars later. I wonder if some of the new buildings will last this long?

If you are ever in Sheffield City Centre maybe have a look around City Hall.

Mark it out at full scale.

Update from a recent site visit. This is the Building Contractor marking out a new fireplace, slate hearth [was previously sandstone] and oak mantle beam at full size 1:1 scale on the wall and floor. We had previously marked out the adjusted fireplace recess hole on site at full size 1:1 as well.

Sometimes it helps Clients to see things marked out in full size before fully committing to a part of their project. It also gives the Client a chance for a final review, fine tuning, and minor amendments before the work is physically installed. Otherwise installing and then checking it afterwards may mean doing the work again which is costly and more time consuming. It turns out the design that was agreed during the design phase, that is illustrated on the drawings, was used. We got it right earlier on when discussing and reviewing with the Clients.

Watch this space, will provide some updates on this project when it’s finished, it will look really nice when it’s completed. šŸ™‚

Happy New 2024 ! Hope everyone had a great break.

I’m now back at work after a decent break, tried to reduce social media use which was actually quite refreshing.

Thought I’d post a refresher re-introduction about me, hopefully this helps you understand a bit more, especially if we haven’t been connected for very long.

I’m a Chartered Architectural Technologist running a micro architectural practice in Sheffield, called Ikonografik Design. Originally from Bournemouth, I worked down south in Hampshire for a few years and then ended up in Sheffield [a tenuous link to Huddersfield where I studied in the 1990’s]. Thought I’d be here for about 2-3 years before moving on somewhere else but really like it here. I’ve been living and working in Sheffield for about 23 years now. The close proximity of the Peak District National Park is a big attraction for me + my wife is also from Sheffield, so I’m not going anywhere else soon, I hope. I love spending time with family and friends and also outdoors, mainly riding bikes in the countryside. I find nature stimulating and inspirational. Used to ride BMX then MTB, nowadays just on the road, less chance of serious injury and takes up less time. Steel bike frames rock, if you know you know!

Used to work in large practice on large multi million Ā£ schemes but after being made redundant twice in 2011, during a recession, I decided to set up my own architectural practice. I have over 25 years experience and I’ve made loads of mistakes and seen lots of change, I’ve learnt a lot from this and try to keep on learning new stuff. This meant I could stay in Sheffield and not have to put up with a crazy commute to larger cities elsewhere like London or Manchester. I work from home and I love it, the flexibility this provides with family life and other commitments works really well for me. This is something I want to continue as things progress. While remote working is not suited for everyone I think it can work really well if set up properly. I don’t spend all day at home working, I’m often out on site, meeting clients, viewing new potential jobs, collaborating with other members of the team such as contractors, engineers, designers and surveyors, networking and attending training events. Having regular real world contact with other people is important. I suppose this means my work profile is more hybrid than 100% remote.

The projects I work on are a mix of residential and commercial. Mostly residential with some small commercial. Much prefer smaller projects over the larger projects. Over the last few years I’ve worked on loads of extensions + conversions + an occasional new build house here and there. Building types such as private houses + residential schemes for property developers + doctors surgeries + funeral directors + an alcohol rehab charity + offices + shops + Pilates studios + coffee shops...

As a practice our approach is that we want to buck the trend against consumerism, changing fashions and ā€˜disposable architecture’. Aiming for low impact, environmentally friendly, healthy, attractive, durable and low maintenance buildings that give joy and delight and that also stand the test of time. This approach is summarised as five vital parts – People + Environment + Site + Materials + Durability. I also have a meticulous and obsessive attention to detail, want things to work optimally and also to look nice.

I soon found that running a profitable business requires a different skillset that I wasn’t taught at university. I’ve learnt a lot and I’m still learning. I recognise that I work too many hours at the moment but I am trying to put in place steps to adddress this. Watch this space to see what that means.

A big part of my identity is also my faith. I rarely post about this and some of you reading this might be surprised to hear this. Mainly because I believe politics and religion are topics to steer clear of in most conversations, especially social media, they can often divide people in lots of different ways. I try to be helpful when on social media but also neutral on such things. Anyway, I identify as a Christian, albeit with many flaws and mistakes made. I help out with a church in Sheffield called Pathway Church. Pathway Church is a bit different to churches that you might be used to. There is no weekly Sunday service, but instead meet in smaller groups scattered in different places to go deep and grow together. We do gather all together though at other times, but not every week. If you have opinions and questions perhaps don’t post about the wrongs and rights about faith but let’s have an amicable conversation, you could even come down for a visit to find out more that way. See the link in the comments below. Regardless of what we believe I hope we can all have respect and dignity for each other, despite our differences. Hopefully what unites is much greater than what divides us.

There you have it friends, my little re-introduction. Keep an eye out for posts about architecture and buildings. Hopefully the posts will be helpful and inspirational !

Team Ikonografik [that’s like just me! 😁] are at the Build It Live show in Bicester tomorrow!

Build It Live is the UK’s most practical self build exhibition. The show runs from 10-11th June.

I’m helping out tomorrow on Saturday 10th as one of the experts, giving free, practical and impartial advice to members of the public about their dream project.

Build It Live is at Bicester Heritage Centre, Oxfordshire.

Looking forward to meeting a few people who I’ve not met in person before.

Also looking forward to checking out The Sustainable Building Products Pavillion in association with The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products [ASBP]. Hopefully circular economy principles will be on full display.

Thank you to the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) for helping facilitate this.

Pleased to be helping out at the Build It Live Show on 11th June as one of the experts, giving free, practical and impartial advice to members of the public about their dream project.

I’ve not taken part in one of these shows for a few years, mainly as the pandemic made it a bit tricky but hopefully that is behind us now.

Build It Live is at Bicester Heritage Centre, Oxfordshire.

If you are in the area and are going to the show come and say hello or even better book a slot with me and I’ll see how I can help you.

What is the difference between a vapour control layer and breather membrane? I’m still surprised at how many guys on site and building contractors [also designers !] don’t understand the importance and difference of these components.

A vapour control layer stops internal moisture laden air [vapour] entering the building fabric and cooling down enough to create condensation inside the building fabric. This is called interstitial condensation and can create water droplets that drip back into the building and create havoc with damp spots, mould, black spot, poor internal air quality etc.

A breather membrane stops external water [like rain or snow] entering the building but also lets internal moisture that may build up inside the building fabric be released into the atmosphere. Almost like Goretex for a building.

Usually used on framed buildings, such as timber framed or metal framed. There are different types of vapour control layer that are ā€˜intelligent’ and release vapour in the summertime as it dries out quicker and less vapour in the winter time as it won’t dry out as much. Usually formed from sheets and rolls these need to be sealed and bonded together to create a homogenous sealed layer as part of a buildings air tightness strategy. You can also get spray on products as well, which are good for tricky junctions.

There is a specific British Standard to refer to and also specialist condensation caclulations that should be done for any project, often using specialist building physics software.

Don’t get caught out, make sure these are installed and function properly. Some examples of how I try to show this on our drawings but need to ensure this is communicated several times on site as well.

Little vid of a bespoke spiral staircase we designed for the community cafƩ project.

We had to add in the staircase as an additional fire escape staircase so there are two separate means of escape stair in the event of a fire. This also means we can keep most of the internal layout as designed that gives a nicer, welcoming and more open feel to it.

Fairly utilitarian design and materials in galvanised steel plate and rod, with durbar / chequer plate treads. Will do a larger overall update on this project soon as the design has developed significantly now and it’s looking quite exciting.

Spiral staircases are specialist items and need to be designed in accordance with BS 5395 Part 2. This covers things like a minimum tread width, maximum riser height and handrail dimensions. Adhering to these guidelines will ensure your spiral stairway is reliable and safe and is approved under the Building Regulations. Of course, there's also plenty of scope for customizing your stairs to match your specific style and space requirements.

Slightly odd that BS 5395 hasn’t been updated since 1984, that means no updates for 39 years! Will be engaging with a specialist spiral staircase manufacturer soon.

Love the stair headroom clash detection that can easily be switched on in Archicad, use this for all projects now, really useful.šŸ™‚

Are you are only interested in big ticket clients that have a decent budget because they are more profitable and better for you? Say something like clients and projects that have a minimum budget of £250k? Anything less than that and it's not worth it?

Or do you believe in the power of good architecture to improve and enrich people's lives, no matter what the construction budget is?

Here’s a little example of a project that doesn't have a big budget, but if successfully built will make a massive difference to my client and her family. My client's mum has osteoporosis and is disabled. Her husband is getting older and finding it hard to care for her on his own. I've been asked to design a standalone annexe in the back garden of my client's home. This means my client's parents can have their own independent and accessible accommodation while having the extra support of my client nearby. There is a budget of about Ā£75k. The project has recently been submitted for Planning, fingers crossed Planning Permission is approved soon!

For my architectural practice it’s not just about the big ticket clients and flashy projects, it's also about the smaller, less sexy projects that make a positive difference to our communities. We don’t have a minimum construction budget for new projects. These projects may not be as exciting as some other projects out there, but they are helping ordinary people. People like you and me, their families and our communities. Hopefully we can help make a difference, no matter how small. [Personally, I find this quite exciting!].

I want to use my business as a force for good, to help society and to reduce the impacts on the environment. It's not just about tick box CSR and charity donations. It's about getting involved and doing something through my work. It's a key part of my Mission.

If you like what I’ve said and where I’m coming from here I’d like to know your thoughts. Let me know in the comments below. Down there ! ↓ ↓ ā†“šŸ™‚
