Meet our Studio Manager, Esme.

“Before settling into studio life, I spent four years travelling the world as a solo backpacker. Each winter living in chalets and working in the mountains of Austria, Italy and France, and each summer I chased the sun, backpacking somewhere warm.”

Creativity has always been a big part of my life, I studied Graphic Design and in my spare time I love painting and crafting. Travelling sparked my interest in architecture around the world and how design reflects culture and landscape. Japan is a particular favourite of mine - where old and new design coexist harmoniously.

When I’m not in the studio, you’ll usually find me powered by coffee, chasing after my two energetic toddlers and exploring new places. Nature is my reset.. and sometimes my hiding spot.”

As we approach the end of the first month of 2026, we’re taking a look back at 2025 and some of our highlights and achievements as a practice.

It was a great year for us, becoming a team of 4 by welcoming Esme, our Studio Manager, and celebrating Jamie becoming a qualified architect.

We took on over 30 new projects, gained planning permission 15 times, and had 20 projects on site. But we also loved getting to know all of our clients - understanding their individual needs and their homes through listening carefully and approaching each bespoke project with creativity and practicality.

It has been wonderful to revisit completed builds and hear the fantastic feedback from our clients.

Here’s to 2026 being another great year for Astrid Architects.

Meet the Team: Oli Montgomery - Part II Architectural Apprentice

“From a young age, I knew I wanted to be an architect. What started as hours spent building
worlds out of LEGO in primary school has grown into a real passion for creating thoughtful,
bespoke spaces. As an Architectural Assistant, I enjoy being involved in every stage of a project,
from the first spark of an idea to the final visualisation, and I love seeing concepts develop into
something tangible.
I’m especially drawn to unique building forms and shaping experiences that feel personal and
meaningful to each client. High-quality renders and architectural visualisation are a big part of my
creative drive, giving me the chance to bring concepts to life in a way thats immersive and
exciting.
Outside of the studio, you’ll usually find me at the gym or experimenting in the kitchen with new
recipes. I also love spending time with my siblings, who keep me grounded, entertained, and
inspired in their own way.”

Holly popped over to the Peaks for a site visit on Wednesday, to see how our bungalow renovation project is coming along. This lovely 1940s house has so much space and incredible views but was also in need of some modernisation and a new layout to suit modern life for our clients. The remodelled plan will feature a new zoned layout, including a large kitchen-dining room which overlooks the lovely garden and views of the Peaks beyond. The house is also having a facelift externally with new render which we persuaded the Peak District planning officers would be appropriate in this setting.

Work has been happening in one half of the house while the clients occupy the other- some quality lead work has been done on the roofs, including a new roof area to replace a conservatory, and floor joists are being replaced and insulated. The house will be spacious, light and warm, and perfect for the next generation of inhabitants.

A classic addition to this lovely period home.
Our clients had moved to this 1930s detached property from a bespoke new build, starting a new chapter in their lives to be closer to family. The house had an old conservatory which performed poorly and took valuable light from the kitchen, which had an awkward layout.

In our design we created a small extension to replace the conservatory, opening up to the kitchen to create a light, sociable and well zoned room. The extension houses a lovely dining area overlooking the garden, through a large picture window. While the kitchen has been upgraded with an island and a handy utility area near the back door. The house has also had a nice facelift with new render.

The project has been a pleasure to see come together for our lovely clients, with the contractor team doing an excellent job on site.

It is always great to see a project progressing on site. We have been overseeing the construction of our two-storey rear extension project in Greystones. The work is advancing nicely, imminently moving onto the er****on of the new first floor. To current, the construction team has managed well the tanking and retaining wall aspects along with getting the steel H-frame into place for supporting the existing property.

Meet the Team: Jamie Smith, Project Architect.

“Architecture has always felt like a natural path for me, blending my love for creativity with strong skills in art and maths. From early on, I was inspired by artists like David Hockney (I am a Bradford boy after all) and I continue to pursue creative outlets like life drawing in my free time. A fascination for space, buildings, and nature, means my work gets to be a creative outlet, and each home I get to design is a passion project specifically tailored to an individual client.

After over a decade of architectural education and training, five years of which have been working at Astrid, I am now a recently qualified architect. I’m proud to work at Astrid and be based in Sheffield, where our projects proudly reflect a strong sense of place. I’ve worked across a variety of projects, from bespoke extensions on period properties to tailored new builds, and I particularly like how each one is unique and a collaborative process with our clients.

Outside of work, I enjoy running, and earlier this year completed the Brighton Marathon. I also love to travel as often as I can, getting to draw architectural inspiration from around the world.“

We love it when an ambitious plan comes together! Our lovely clients on this project had downsized from a characterful, period property into a 1930s bungalow in need of renovation. They wanted to create a new heart of the home in an extended kitchen-dining-living room at the rear of the property, giving views to the generous garden and maximising natural light.

Our design included a rear extension and internal remodelling to help zone areas of the house and create a practical inner core along with a generous new sociable space. The wow factor comes from a vaulted ceiling and bespoke glazed gable on the rear elevation, bringing in lots of light to the space, and framing a view of the garden. Now the house looks smart yet modest at the front but reveals a uniquely designed, light, sociable space at the back.

On site soon! We recently gained planning approval for a new dormer bungalow in Millhouses and look forward to seeing it come to life. We pride ourselves on building great relationships with our clients, consultants and contractors, and are part of a great team on this project for a local developer.

The new house occupies a former garage plot and has been designed as a generously proportioned family home which sits discreetly within its location on this junction, next to mid-century bungalows and a newly refurbished and extended 1930s semi-detached home.

If you’re planning a self build or have a site ripe for development, get in touch with us to discuss your ideas and aspirations.

During June we’ve been working on the technical design package for our new build dormer bungalow project in Bents Green. We’ve thoroughly enjoying working on what will be a highly sustainable and spacious home, making the most of its location with Sheffield’s views and lovely neighbourhood. We have designed the thermal fabric to meet LETI standards and are working with local consultants, Expert Energy, on the Part L and Part O standards for the Building Regs. We can’t wait to see it starting on site soon.

On another note, this is our first foray into trying out AI rendering (well the first successful one!) The bricks are a bit big but the overall effect is good. I don’t think AI will be coming for architects’ jobs any time soon as we have to do a lot of clever problem solving and designing to the nuances of people’s lives, but if it comes in handy to snazz up a render we might get on board!

New Build Planning Permission Granted!

We were thrilled to have our new build dormer bungalow project in Bents Green approved for planning. The new house will replace an old bungalow which was deemed structurally unsound, and will create a spacious, light and modern home for a family with young children.

The house was designed to respect the street scene which is predominantly made up of period and newer bungalows, but we still wanted to maximise the accommodation on the first floor and provide access to the views across the back. We convinced the planners that a higher roof line is appropriate due to the pattern of ridge heights on the street, and also won them over with the inset balcony on the rear elevation. The external materials are a palette of buff brick, render and stone detailing, which complements the local properties while adding a contemporary presence on the street.

Our clients are keen to make their new home as sustainable as possible so we will be developing a technical design to very high standards of thermal performance and air tightness.
