Woodland garden today with hellebores, snowdrops, pulmonaria and cyclamen in flower and warm enough for a bit of pollination! The Hamemmelis is only now going over after having been in flower for nearly 2 months - such a generous thing 🙂

Woodland garden today...
1. Darmera peltata in front of hamemellis CV.
2. These liquidambar don't really come into leaf on our cool site until May, but the pay off is that they're reluctant to lose their leaves at all 🍁.

A few scenes from the field in what daylight there is...
1. Seedheads of peucedanum verticilliare, teasel dispacsus fullonum and miscanthus sinensis as the sun rises over the hillside.
2. Evergreen Euonymus carnosus has flowered well and looks incredibly fresh.
3. Seed of the above from a few weeks ago.
4.one of (many) winter jobs is building a retaining wall to gain a few extra square metres of flat and level space. I separate the rocks from the subsoil and will use them to build the wall. The subsoil is going up the hill...
5. ...and spread over a new area we're doing a low fertility/free draining planting on next spring.
6. It's fascinating seeing the exposed roots of plants in the nursery bed immediately above. These are peucedanum verticilliare pushing through the marl and sandstone to well over a metre twenty.
7. Little vid of the seedheads in the dry garden
8. Damp meadow planting.

A few hours of good weather between deluges this week. The chickens have commandeered the picnic and bird tables to make the most of the sunshine before the hillside leaves us in shadow for the winter.

One of my favourite times of year in the tall herbaceous planting, dwarfed by giant species dahlias in full flower now, teasels and tall grasses like miscanthus sacchariflorus and molinia arundinacea. The white flowers of Artemesia lactiflora are beauitfully almond scented, and really carry on a still day. It was warm enough for one or two honeybees to be out foraging (last pic)

Mahonia eurybractea giving a punch of fresh green among the seedheads of the dry garden. Native silver birches and Metasequoia glyptostroboides are in peak autumn dress beyond, with Aralia elata looking typically fiery and fantastic.

Damp meadow planting yesterday... Molinia caerulea didn't enjoy the hot dry summer much, but has hung on and its colour is growing richer by the day. The aster Symphyotrichum n.a "Barr's purple" resonates really nicely with the reddish autumn hues of astilbes and artemesia. Elsewhere, we'll need to remove/reduce some of the clumps of Eupatorium cannabinum, h**p agrimony, as they've started to restrict the open feel of this area.
