Workers at an engineering firm were put at risk of serious ill-health after their employer ignored repeated warnings about unsafe metalworking fluids.

Following a routine inspection, our inspectors found workers at Tracel Ltd were being exposed to metalworking fluid mist. This can cause lung disease, asthma, and dermatitis.

We served formal Improvement Notices requiring the company to carry out proper risk assessments and put controls in place.

When we returned, nothing had changed. Hazards still weren't identified. Risks weren't controlled. Fluid quality wasn't maintained.

HSE Inspector Stephen Manley: "This case was entirely avoidable had the company taken appropriate action following our inspection."

Poor management of metalworking fluids still leads to workers developing lung disease. If you use these fluids, review your arrangements now.

Recent water heater flushing 💧 by Dan. Lots of sediment removed from this water heater cylinder. Not something many people think of doing, even in a domestic setting. Nice work Dan! 🔧 🪣 💦

Water heater blow down (or flushing) involves periodically draining the tank to remove accumulated sediment, minerals, and other impurities. The process involves connecting a hose to the drain valve, and draining the water from the bottom until clear water flows out.

Why is this done?

✅ Removes Sediment: Minerals and other impurities in hard water can settle at the bottom of the tank, forming a layer of sludge.

✅ Prevents Corrosion: Sediment accumulation can lead to corrosion and reduce the lifespan of the water heater.

✅ Maintains Efficiency: A clean tank heats water more efficiently, as sediment doesn't impede heat transfer.

✅ Controls Legionella: Draining the sludge helps maintain healthier water conditions, reducing the risk of Legionella bacteria.
