Keep your caravans secure this summer🔐
Below are some top tips from our crime prevention experts for caravan owners and those visiting our county.
Caravan owners:
▪ Ensure good quality locks are fitted to all caravan entry points, including windows
▪ Fit an alarm to act as a deterrent
▪ Install CCTV to act as a deterrent. Cameras can be located inside the van to prevent them being tampered with
▪ Fit a sensor light that will illuminate the pitch
▪ Check your insurance for specific security requirements
▪ Ensure gas bottles are securely stored
▪ Conduct regular maintenance and security checks on your van
▪ At the end of the season empty the van of all belongings and keep curtains open to show there is nothing of value inside
Visitors:
▪ Before leaving the caravan or going to sleep, ensure that you lock all the windows and doors securely
▪ Do not leave spare keys hidden near the caravan. Ask for extra keys at the time of booking if required
▪ If the caravan has a security chain or restrictor, do not use only this to lock your doors as it is easy to remove. You can use them for added security
▪ Don’t leave any valuables on show. Jewellery, laptops, and phones are tempting to opportunist thieves. Take any small valuables with you when you leave the caravan
▪ Don’t leave handbags near windows or doors. They are easy to grab and often contain valuable items
▪ Ensure your property is marked. Use etching, engraving, marker pen or UV pens
▪ Register valuables on a property register such as Immobilise and you are more likely to recover your items should the worst happen
▪ Ensure you have sufficient security measures in place to keep equipment that cannot be stored inside the caravan secure. Bikes should have at least two ‘D’ locks and be secured to something solid
▪ Ensure young children are aware of where to go and what to do in case of an emergency or getting lost. Keep a list of useful numbers and ask your child to wear a wristband/locket with your contact details on
