We think about keeping the engine warm. But what about the battery?

When equipment is operating in very cold conditions, the battery can become an important part of the reliability equation.
Cold temperatures can affect battery performance, so maintaining the battery at a suitable temperature can help it operate efficiently when it is needed.

That is where PEREGRINE Battery Pan Heaters are intended to help.
PEREGRINE battery pan heaters are designed to maintain the battery temperature at a level to allow the battery to operate efficiently.
They are generally used in ambient temperatures below −10°C and incorporate an internal thermal cut out set at 40°C for safety.
The heaters can be fitted in multiples where required, depending on the size of the battery tray and the number of batteries involved.
They are ideally controlled by a separate air thermostat fitted to a nearby panel.
And with a large range of voltages available, including low voltage DC, together with a range of wattages, they can be specified to suit different battery applications.

Reliable equipment operation in cold conditions depends on more than keeping the engine warm. Fuel and battery performance also need consideration.

Heat isn't the only thing an engine heater has to deal with.

Vibration can be just as important.

When a coolant heater is mounted directly onto an engine, it is exposed to the same vibration generated during engine operation.
Over time, excessive vibration can place additional stress on the heater and its components, potentially compromising its operation and reducing its usable life.
Ideally, heaters should not be mounted directly to an engine where there is an alternative installation option.
But in some applications, direct mounting is necessary, particularly where space or installation requirements leave no alternative.

That is where an Anti Vibration Kit can make a difference.
Preheat Engineering PVAC Anti Vibration Kits have been designed for applications where a heater needs to be mounted directly to a Clarke engine or where high levels of vibration are present.
The kit uses a mounting plate, U bracket and rubber anti vibration mounts to provide additional protection between the heater and the engine.
It is also retrofittable, making it a practical solution for existing installations.

Considering the environment an engine heater operates in is just as important as choosing the right heater for the job.

ATEX Zone 2 explained

ATEX is an important consideration when specifying equipment for environments where potentially explosive atmospheres may occur.
A Zone 2 area is a location where an explosive atmosphere is not expected during normal operation, but could occur occasionally and, if it does, would only be present for a short period.

This can occur where flammable gases, vapours or mists may be present.
Equipment installed in these environments therefore needs to be carefully selected. Electrical equipment must be appropriately designed and certified for the particular hazardous area so that it does not present an unacceptable ignition risk.

This is particularly important when heating fuel tanks.
Where fuel needs to be maintained at the correct temperature within an ATEX classified area, a standard heater may not be suitable for the application.
Preheat Engineering offers ATEX Zone 2 certified fuel tank heaters, with IP66 protection, providing a heating solution for applications where these requirements apply.

Renewable and biofuels are often discussed as part of the move away from fossil fuels, but engineers must also consider temperature.

As fuel gets colder, its physical properties can change. Lower temperatures may increase viscosity and, in some fuels, cause waxing or crystallisation. This can restrict fuel flow and create challenges for reliable engine starting and operation.

The part of a heater you don’t see could make maintenance much easier.

Imagine having to drain a large tank or sump just to service a heating element.
Not exactly a quick maintenance job.
For large generators, marine applications and other equipment where tanks or sumps contain significant quantities of coolant, accessing a conventional heating element can create unnecessary disruption.

That’s where a PEREGRINE YP-Type withdrawable element pumped coolant heater can make a difference.

The withdrawable element can be removed for servicing or replacement without the need to drain the tank or sump.

The integrated pump forces heated coolant around the engine, making the YP-Type heater suitable for large diesel engines and other high-wattage applications where heat needs to be transferred quickly.

When it comes to engine heating, it is not simply about producing heat.
It is about getting that heat where it needs to be.

A pumped coolant heater incorporates a pump to circulate heated coolant around the engine or system. This can be particularly important in larger or more complex applications where effective heat distribution is required.

The extreme temperatures we’ve experienced this summer have been difficult to ignore.
With repeated heatwaves, prolonged dry conditions and temperatures reaching 38.1°C in the UK, wildfires have become a very real and devastating consequence.
This year we’ve seen homes destroyed, communities evacuated and firefighters working in exceptionally challenging conditions. Across England and Wales, wildfire numbers have already surpassed previous records.

And as summers become hotter and drier, fire protection and emergency preparedness become increasingly important.
