Safe working isn’t optional. It’s built into everything we do.

One area we consistently go further than most is traffic management.

Whether we’re working roadside, near junctions, or in built-up areas, we plan properly and put the right controls in place. That means signage, barriers, safe working zones and, where required, full traffic management setups to protect our team and the public.

It’s not the quickest way to do the job. It’s not the cheapest either.
But it is the right way.

Too often we see tree work being carried out with little to no consideration for passing traffic, pedestrians, or safe stopping distances. That’s where things go wrong.

We’d rather take the time, do it properly, and know that:
• Our team are protected
• The public are protected
• The work is fully compliant

That’s the standard we hold ourselves to on every job.

Working closely with Northern Powergrid this week to safely remove an ash tree affected by Ash Dieback at a busy pub site in Newcastle upon Tyne.

This wasn’t a straightforward dismantle. The tree was directly interacting with overhead lines, so an organised power outage was put in place to allow the work to be carried out safely and efficiently for everyone involved.

Jobs like this are a good reminder of how much coordination goes on behind the scenes:
• Network operators planning and managing outages
• Careful site-specific risk assessment
• Tight sequencing of work to minimise disruption to the client and public

Ash dieback continues to present real challenges, particularly in high-use areas like pubs, car parks and roadsides where the risk profile changes quickly as trees decline.

Big thanks to Northern Powergrid for the support on this one and to our team for delivering it safely and professionally.

Keeping standards high behind the scenes 🔧

Our MEWP has just been through its 6-monthly LOLER inspection with Tyne & Wear Access — ensuring everything is compliant, safe, and operating exactly as it should.

LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) isn’t just a tick-box exercise. It’s a legal requirement, and more importantly, it’s there to make sure the equipment we rely on every day is safe for our team to use at height. Faults get picked up early, risks are controlled, and we can get on with the job knowing everything is as it should be.

Just as important as the inspection itself is having the right service partner behind you. Reliable support, proper knowledge of the equipment, and the ability to step in quickly when needed makes a massive difference to keeping work moving and standards high.

That’s exactly why we work with Tyne & Wear Access. Alongside the inspection, they’ve also given the machine a proper deep clean and check over, keeping it in top condition and ready for the next job.

Fully inspected. Properly supported. Ready to go.

What actually happens after you make a cut on a tree?

Simon recently spent a day at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew attending the Treework CODIT workshop, led by world-renowned arborist Dirk Dujesiefken.

The focus was CODIT (Compartmentalisation Of Damage In Trees). In simple terms: how trees respond to injury, and how our work either supports… or fights against that process.

The photos here say everything.

On the left side: a flush cut
On the right: a correctly positioned pruning cut

Same tree biology (same tree!). Completely different outcomes.

A flush cut removes the tree’s natural defence boundaries, allowing decay to progress further into the stem.

A good pruning cut works with the tree, allowing it to compartmentalise and contain decay effectively.

That’s not theory. That’s visible, measurable difference in long-term tree health.

Workshops like this are a reminder that good arboriculture isn’t just about getting the job done
It’s about understanding how trees actually function, and making decisions that stand up years down the line.

We’re always investing in that understanding, so when we make a cut on your tree, it’s done for the right reasons, in the right way.

Storm-damaged tree. Compromised structure. No room for error.

Following the impact of Storm Dave, we were called in by one of our land management clients to deal with a wind-damaged tree in a restricted area.

This wasn’t a straightforward dismantle.
With storm damage, you’re not working with predictable timber. You’re dealing with stored energy, partial failures, and the potential for sudden movement.

This is exactly where our specialist winching equipment comes into play.

Before any cutting took place, we:
• Assessed the direction of failure and load within the stem
• Identified and set secure anchor points
• Applied controlled tension to stabilise and influence movement
• Established clear communication between ground and operator

Only then did we begin a controlled removal, managing the tree safely back to ground without shock loading or risk to the surrounding area.

Jobs like this are a good reminder that storm damage isn’t just “a fallen tree”. It’s often one of the highest-risk scenarios we deal with.

We support landowners and managers across Tyne and Wear and Durham with safe, planned responses to storm-damaged trees.

If you’ve got trees affected by recent weather, it’s worth getting them properly assessed. What looks stable isn’t always stable.

Ever wondered how decay actually starts inside a tree?

This sycamore in South Shields is a great example.

What you’re looking at here is three historic pruning wounds that have gradually coalesced. Over time, the tree has been unable to fully compartmentalise each wound, allowing decay to spread and merge internally, forming a cavity.

This is exactly why pruning decisions matter.

Done well, trees can effectively seal wounds and limit decay. Done poorly, or repeatedly in the same area, it can create a pathway for dysfunction to establish and expand.

From the outside, this might not always be obvious. That’s why aerial inspections are sometimes necessary to properly assess structural integrity and risk.

Trees don’t fail overnight.
They fail following a sequence of events.

Understanding that sequence is what good tree management is all about.

The occupants of a silver blue Vauxhall Astra, registration DL07UAV, stole a chainsaw from our vehicle whilst we were working on The Hawthorns in Boldon today.

The car has been sited in the Boldon area again this evening.

Big thanks to for providing a properly engineered scaffolding ramp solution on this job.

Access was a little… interesting. Our MEWP needed to get over a beautiful but awkward set of stone steps to reach the rear garden, so a purpose-built scaffold ramp was installed to allow safe, level access for the machine.

Once in position, the team were able to safely remove several ash trees suffering from ash dieback, with everything carried out efficiently and without damage to the property or those rather lovely steps.

Tree work isn’t just about saws and ropes. Often it’s about careful planning, logistics, and working with the right partners to make tricky situations safe and achievable.

Teamwork makes it happen.

Managing tree risk without losing nature 🌳. Not every failing tree needs to disappear.

Working alongside a commercial client's Woodland and Ecology team, we recently tackled a mature ash tree in poor condition next to critical infrastructure.

Instead of a full removal, we planned a different outcome.

We:
• removed the unsafe upper crown
• retained the stable lower stem
• created habitat features such as coronet cuts, cavities and cracks
• converted the tree into a long-term standing deadwood habitat

The risk to infrastructure was reduced.
The ecological value was protected.

Ash dieback is forcing difficult decisions across the UK, but good tree management isn’t about blanket felling. It’s about understanding where the risk actually sits and keeping what still has value.

This project is a great example of how utilities and contractors can work together to meet legal duties, protect assets, and still support wildlife.

Careful planning. Proportionate action. Better outcomes.
