The hull stage of any yacht is one of the most important moments in the entire build process.

Before joinery, before systems, before fit-out, the structural decisions made at this stage will shape how the finished yacht performs at sea.

The flat-bottomed hull form - a defining characteristic of the Southerly range - is not a compromise. It's a deliberate engineering choice that allows the yacht to dry out level on a falling tide, sit upright on a beach, and carry the swing keel system without the structural complexity that a conventional fin-keel hull would require.

Combined with twin rudders positioned for efficiency across a wide range of heel angles, the result is a hull that performs well both upwind in deep water and in the shallows where most cruising yachts wouldn't dare venture.

We posted this on April 1st deliberately - because we knew you wouldn't believe it.

A bluewater cruiser, beached, by design. The Southerly 480 swing keel is one of the most innovative systems in offshore sailing - raising fully into the hull to reduce draught dramatically, allowing the yacht to sit upright on a flat bottom, dry out on a falling tide, and float free on the flood.
