Silver Birch Tree With TPO in rapid decline due to Honey Fungus infection.

Honey Fungus produces mushrooms around the base of trees it has infected. The symptoms appear in the crowns of infected trees as discoloured foliage, reduced growth, dieback of the branches and eventually death.

You can never cure a tree of Honey Fungus, you can get the fungus to go into remission where the tree returns to health and vigor but unfortunately by the time it was diagnosed the damage was too severe to consider trying to save this tree.

In the interests of safety the decision was made by the Local Planning Authority to lift the preservation order so that the tree could be dismantled to ground level. The stump then ground out entirely below ground level.

Monterey Cypress, 150 Years Old, 70 ft Tall, 6 ft Across The Base, TPO Protected, Sectionally dismantled using rigging and lowering techniques to avoid any damage to landscaping and surrounding structures; obstacles to avoid included properties, a conservatory, garden walls, a pond, a garage, patio area and flower beds.

It was sad to see this majestic old tree go, however it was unfortunately deemed end of life following a comprehensive tree survey. The tree was suffering multiple signs of ill health and most worrying of all had begun to shed large limbs which fortunately had narrowly missed causing any major damage to property but more importantly causing any bodily harm.

Following the survey it was agreed by the Local Council Authority that the preservation order in place (TPO) would be lifted so that work could commence to make the tree safe.

In its natural environment a tree in this circumstance would be allowed to slowly fall to pieces over many, many years but in this tree’s domestic environment the risk of harm was deemed unacceptable.

12 Tonnes of timber, 6 Tonnes of woodchip and a whole lot of rigging later this tree was reduced to a tall stump ready for its next stage of life, to be carved in to something spectacular.

Carving updates to follow.
