Today started with getting soaked and very, very muddy! I'm currently having some landscaping work done on my own garden and I hate to waste good topsoil so with no other places left to use it I'm topping up the Chicken run. The run will move in the next year so I thought they'd enjoy having a hunt for worms while adding some lovely rich Chicken manure to the area ready for when it becomes a planted bed again.

Planning ahead for how a garden may evolve overtime is an aspect that I love to build into my designs. Whether for the changing needs of a growing family moving from sandpits to trampolines and beyond or the shift that may occur of pottering during retirement with an eye to the changes that could make it easier to mange should the need arise in the future.

So excited, I've at long last got a wildlife camera. My own garden reflects my love of nature, and food, and I've always wanted to see what is visiting when I'm not looking. It arrived late yesterday after it was dark, and as its a solar powered camera its now charging in the daylight. Cannot wait to see what it may reveal, I've a feeling I'll be glued to the App on my phone!

I've now switched off, (from work) and hope you all have a lovely Christmas & New Year. I hope you get some time to switch off & recharge too. It been great to catch up with many of you in person this year, and to connect with such amazing people.

Whatever you are doing don't forget to step outside into the hashtag and enjoy a breath of fresh air and the uniqueness of the season, even hashtag can share a surprise or two and be beautiful.

Enjoy my seasonal flower arrangement, all from the garden (and containing my favorite comedy sketch joke made famous by the Two Ronnies).

This one's for my fellow Garden Designers out there. Over on my sister company website we've just posted our latest blog all about creating successfully used care, and organisation based, gardens, so if you want to find out more go take a look.

A typical site analysis checklist for garden designers, landscape architects and other outside specialists, is likely to include: site orientation, soil condition and pH, existing plants, client’s wish list…and much more. However, when it comes to organisational settings, like care homes, do you...

There are many materials to use in creating a new garden, from traditional options like brickwork, timber, paving, and gravel, to newer materials that add a unique element while providing the all-important functions required.

Over the years, I've used various materials early in their introduction to domestic gardens. For example, I first used composite decking in 2005 with Trex, which has since become a mainstay in garden design, with companies like Millboard, TimberTech, and Trex offering a range of options.

Recently, I needed to create a range of curved raised beds for a care home garden and chose Medite Tricoya Extreme, a relatively new material in domestic landscaping. This material, resembling MDF sheets, is bendable, breathable, and easy to install. It has a 25-year in-ground guarantee and a 50-year above-ground guarantee.

So if you need help choosing the right materials for your garden project, feel free to get in touch.

Over 20+ years, I've been fortunate to have worked with a wide range of clients on a diverse mix of garden design projects. I certainly wouldn't describe myself as someone who does quick designs as seen in some of the many garden design-based TV programs. It’s not that I'm slow, don't get me wrong; it’s more that my approach is very much about ensuring that the garden is created with proper time given to working with my client to help them make considered decisions and to explore and address all the questions that the process may bring up before we put a spade in the ground.

In some cases, fulfilling the client's vision for the garden has led to a phased installation to meet the budget or time constraints the clients have. As a result, I have had many clients who I have worked with over several years. Once we have developed a concept for the garden the detailed plans for installation can then be provided as each part is required. This helps to spread the costs and allow for prioritising areas most wanted to be tackled first.

More recently, I've worked with several people doing self-builds of their homes: coming alongside them to develop the garden at the same time as the wider home. The earlier I'm involved, the better, as it allows us to make the most of the opportunities during the build of the property to incorporate future aspects within the garden. This can save both time and money further down the line and the creation of a garden to complement their lovingly built home.

So, if you have a garden project that you think might need a bit of time or feel that you may need to install in stages to achieve all that you hope for why not give me a call as this is exactly how I love to work.
