SWA - No gland, No problem 😳

This steel wire armour cable was feeding a garage….

Twin and Earth cable from Consumer unit to taped up terminal blocks joining this SWA cable.

We regularly see BS 951 clamps inappropriately used to earth the steel wire armour but the use of a jubilee clip is an interesting alternative 😬.

Ceramic ‘Wire Nuts’

Not generally used for fixed wire installations anymore but may still found in some equipment.

Keep an eye out for these or the more common plastic versions we still see today!

These are still available for purchase today if you run out of Wagos 😳

(I found these behind a light switch today whilst removing old cabling and wooden back boxes on a re wire)

Here is our first ever Condudisc installation for a standby generator set.

Gave up digging this stoney ground at 700mm deep 🥵.

Half a 25kg bag of conducrete goes in first, then the condudisc, followed by the remaining bag and a half.

Apparently it’s important to backfill as soon as possible, so we did this immediately compacting everything down as we went.

Initial Ra of this electrode measured out at 60 ohm average.
I will try to post the revised value once another electrode test is done.

I would like to thank for saving the day with a previous video he did on earth electrode testing 🙏.

Megger 1731 started giving me ridiculously high L-N Loop readings all in excess of 6 ohms, where I knew I should be getting around 0.40 ohm.

This also started to affect my 3 Lead Lo (EFLI). Adding to the confusion by ‘roll a dice’ readings from 0.01 and upwards!

Just look at the pin on the back of the Neutral Socket (Marked BLUE L3 on the MFT) I’ve circled it to highlight it.

With a borrowed socket from another MFT I get readings I expect again.

This was an easy fix but I constantly hear of others with relatively new tester’s developing faults that directly relate to build quality 😢.

Who else can’t imagine going back to using the old terminal screw JB’s these days?

These connectors give me confidence that every conductor is secure in its terminal.

It’s also far easier to connect and disconnect cables later on 👌

Definitely helps having the right Wagobox for your 221 connectors 😉

TNS is now TNC-S!

This arrangement is a very common find but in this occasion I took the time to record some values.

A 200mA continuity test between MET and Sheath = 2.86 ohm.

Ze (to lead sheath) = 1.35 ohm. This most likely lower due to the type of test applied.

Ok so we are now left with a piece of ‘exposed’ lead which requires connecting to our earthing system BUT point of connection is a 951 Earth Clamp (not really suitable for PILC)!

DNO Will be called again to inspect this and decide what they want to do with it. For now, all exposed and extraneous parts are at substantially the same potential by way of protective bonding to suit PME requirements.

Before there were Wagos…
Joints like this were used!

I’ve seen illustrations for twist joints like these when took us on a journey into the history of the wiring regs.

The good old foil wrap fix!

NOT RECOMMENDED, even as a temporary fix…..let’s face it, it’s going to remain there until something gets very warm 🔥.

*What on Earth?!?!*

I was called out to look at newly installed bathroom lights that had been wired without the optional extra feature of FUNCTIONAL SWITCHING! 😂

Turns out that wasn’t the worst of it....

ALL CPCs had been cut out except for the links between downlights, these hadn’t even been sleeved.

Class I light switches everywhere on this circuit.

Be careful with ‘value engineered’ items from EBay and the like.

Nasty situations can occur even with what might be considered normal operation (stuff like plug insertion and removal).⚡️

These products are also available in the ‘Spontaneously Combustible’ range. 🔥

Seriously though, be vigilant, stay safe!

It’s not always Twin and Earth for me you know.

Twisted Pairs....as far as I could keep them before punch down!

Cat 6a (originally selected to transmit HDMI).

Add a couple of CT100 coax’s back to central point for luck!
