Today marks 25 years since I put out my last cigarette, and never lit another.

I think I can consider myself an ex smoker now.

Feeling a bit sorry for myself, getting damp and chilly, working on outside lights today.

Then I remembered December 2010, and having to carry a shovel to every job for weeks!

As is tradition in my family.

( And probably one that everyone is heartily tired of.)

I hereby announce the proper arrival of the late Autumn cold snap.

This comes to be when the outside temperature on our drive dips below 0C at 8am, measured by the sensor in my van.

Excitedly, I rushed to share the result of -6C, surely some kind of record as I only put my shorts away recently.

Alas, no, it was -6 on the same day, 20th November, last year.

Plus ca change …

Take care and stay safe out there, especially if like me, you’re up ladders fixing outside lights.

5 years ago, in the first covid lockdown, I filmed and shared this video.

It describes what to do if your RCD trips. At the time, it was to avoid clients having to call in an electrician for something they could diagnose themselves.

It is still valid, and the frequency of RCD trip faults has increased of late as RCDs get more sensitive due to increased regulation.

If you have a power outage, total or partial, check your consumer unit first, then follow these steps and maybe save yourself some time, money and hassle.

Green goo!

"We've noticed a green stain around some of our switches and sockets. We've been told we need a full rewire!"

I have had a few calls of that nature recently.

First the good news. I've never come across a case of green goo yet that warrants a rewire.

I've replaced a lot of accessories, and cleaned a lot off cable ends and walls. (OB1 cleaner from Screwfix is good for this.)

Its technical term is degraded di-isoctyl phthalate. Produced by a chemical reaction between the plasticiser of the insulation and the copper wire conductor, its cause is an anti-oxidant used in pvc insulated cables between 1965 and 1971.

It is toxic but only by ingestion.

The way to tell if it is bad enough to require rewiring is to test it properly.

If you come across it, or know anyone that does, feel free to fire any questions my way.

In the midst of home renovations, I completely missed the fact that Ged Asbery Electrician has been in existence for 20 years.

Though my apprenticeship started in 1979, I took the plunge to go self employed and registered the business on 6th April 2005.

In my first couple of weeks someone smashed my front van window and nicked my SatNav. It was probably that event that made me realise that the mantra of being a sole trader is "nobody is coming to save me." 😁

I started out to serve local clients doing small jobs. A niche that I figured would suit me until I decided what I wanted to do long term.

20 years on, and I'm still in the same niche market. Small jobs for local clients.

After 5 years, I said, "here's to the next five," and after 10 years, "here's to the next 10."

Yeah ... ok ... "here's to the next ... whatever ..." πŸ˜‚

I’m never sure whether participating in bring-your-dog-to-work-day is a great idea.

Especially with a curious greyhound like Wednesday, and a job involving crawling under floorboards.

What’s a suitable task for a pet in the workplace?
