Day 8 of 31 - Faults we have found.

The most frustrating fault I have found recently, was a call out for no power. Upon arrival I noticed the board had been recently changed by another person who wasn’t an electrician. There were a few faults that I found in the board just by looking!
I identified the problem to be the picture below, loose connection on the RCD causing heat build up.
I had to travel and get a spare RCD module to rectify the issue and restore power for the customer.
I was frustrated as the date on the board was less than 6 months old (customer had just brought and moved in earlier that month). This problem should never be an issue, please use competent electricians!

Day 7 of 31 - Why UK sockets are safe?

Whilst growing up I was told (correctly) never to play with sockets, not to stick things in them etc. However, compared to American sockets seen on tv, UK sockets have a few features that keep us protected. Including the switch to isolate Live and Neutral conductors and, best is the "gates" that only open when a plug is pushed into the outlet. This means that nothing can touch the contacts without the gates being open. These are opened by the earth pin on a socket keeping the live contacts safe.

Day 5 of 31 - Cable zones.
As per our regulations we have "safety zones" that we are allowed to run cables within. Unlike plumbers, we can't run our cables wherever we feel like it.

The picture below shows the zones:

150mm from any edge or corner of a wall excluding the floor also, horizontally and vertically from any accessory including a consumer unit.

So next time you go to hang a picture check before hammering in a nail!

Day 3 of 31 - Why we started GSD Electrical Ltd

After bouncing around multiple companies through my apprenticeship, I finally found a company I hoped to settle with. Unfortunately, after 2 years the company started to take a turn and I found myself on a sinking ship. I decided I'd had enough of working for other people and being let down. We decided to take a risk and start our own company and thus GSD Electrical Ltd was formed June 2019. We began by getting a van and the plan was to start with weekend and evening jobs until we had enough to go full time. After 2 weeks we had a customer approach us to rewire their 16th century, 7 bedroom property as they had been disappointed by the previous 2 electricians. I gave my 2 weeks notice at work and started it the following Monday, since then we haven't stopped.

Pictured below is the first van we had and realising we needed a bigger one!

Day 2 of 31 - A little bit about my career.

I (Sam) became a qualified electrician in 2016 after completing a 4 year apprenticeship. During these 4 years I was made redundant and left 2 different companies due to poor working environments. After being qualified for 3 years, I completed my testing and inspecting qualification, meaning I am an approved electrician. We then begin GSD Electrical Ltd. I have since then completed other qualifications including EV charging. Being an approved electrician means I can test and inspect other peoples work and test existing installations.

I thoroughly enjoy what I do and helping create peoples vision.

We want to make sure we are connecting with you properly, not like this though. We believe this work was done by another electrical firm, this was picked up on an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This will be repaired as this is not to regulation!

We’ve been completing works in the centre of Stamford, so had to get a nice shot of it!
