We’re looking for an experienced tree surgeon and climber who holds a Class 1 (Cat C+E) licence to join our team.

You’ll be climbing and driving the truck, working across Surrey, West Sussex, and West London.

We’re a small, family-run team and we work hard – so we need someone who turns up on time, grafts, looks after the kit, and gets on with the crew.

You’ll need:

✔ Class 1 (Cat C+E) driving licence – essential
✔ Climbing experience and tickets

Start date: 5th May – but we’re keen to get the right person sorted quickly.

🌸 Did you know that one of the most spectacular blossom trees in Britain is almost completely inaccessible to bees? 🐝

This is Prunus ‘Kanzan’, the Japanese Flowering Cherry, currently at peak bloom across Surrey and West Sussex. Those stunning double pink rosette flowers are breathtaking. But those extra petals replace the pollen-bearing stamens, meaning pollinators simply cannot get in.

Beautiful. But worth understanding properly.
If you have one of these in your garden, here is what matters right now 👇

🔸 These trees spread considerably more than most people expect. A mature Kanzan can reach 10 metres tall and equally as wide. In a residential setting that needs managing properly before it becomes a problem

🔸 Nesting season is fully underway. Any work on this tree requires a qualified arborist nest check before a single branch is touched between now and the end of August

🔸 Always check for a TPO before any work takes place. Mature ornamental cherries are frequently protected. Work without written consent from your local authority carries an unlimited fine

🌸 Did you know that right now, across the UK, Purple Crab Apple trees are at their absolute peak bloom and they will only last another two to three weeks?
This stunning Purple Crab Apple (Malus ‘Royalty’) is in full flower this week and it is one of the most spectacular sights of the entire spring season. That extraordinary deep cerise-magenta blossom is not just beautiful. It is one of nature’s most important moments of the year. 🌸💜
Here is why this tree matters far more than most people realise 👇
🔸 It is a critical early food source for pollinators. Bees, hoverflies and early butterflies emerging from winter rely on blossom like this when food is still genuinely scarce. A mature Crab Apple in full flower is an absolute lifeline for early season wildlife
🔸 It keeps on giving right through to winter. Those flowers will become deep red crab apples that feed blackbirds, thrushes and fieldfares through the coldest months of the year. One tree working hard for wildlife all year round
🔸 Urban Crab Apples are under more pressure than they look. Compacted soil, road salt, pavement damage and air pollution all silently stress city trees over time. A professional health check can make the difference between a tree that thrives and one that quietly declines
🔸 The pruning window for this species is now closed. Any structural work on Malus species should be completed in late winter before blossom begins. Work carried out now risks stressing the tree and significantly reducing the fruit crop that wildlife depends on in autumn
🔸 Nesting season is fully underway. A tree in full blossom is prime nesting habitat. A qualified arborist nest check is a legal requirement before any work takes place between now and the end of July

🌳 See all those shoots growing straight from the trunk? Most people think something is wrong. Here is what they actually mean.
This is a Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) spotted on our rounds in West Sussex this week and those shoots growing from the trunk and main stems are called epicormic shoots, produced here as a direct response to previous hard pruning. They are the tree’s way of pushing out new growth and recovering its energy. 🌿
Hornbeam is one of Britain’s most underrated native trees and here is what every owner needs to know 👇
🔸 The wood is extraordinarily hard. In fact the name Hornbeam literally means “hard tree” in Old English. Historically it was used for butchers’ blocks, mill cogs and piano keys because it is so tough. A tree this strong deserves equally strong professional care
🔸 Epicormic shoots need managing carefully. They are a sign the tree has been through significant pruning stress. Removing them all at once puts the tree straight back into decline. Gradual management by a qualified arborist is the only safe approach
🔸 Mature Hornbeams are frequently protected by a Tree Preservation Order. Any work without prior written consent from your local authority carries an unlimited fine. Always check before you touch
🔸 Nesting season is fully underway across West Sussex. Dense epicormic growth like this is perfect nesting habitat. A qualified arborist nest check is legally required before any work takes place between now and the end of July

🌿 This is what a properly managed formal garden looks like. And right now it needs your attention.

Those striking dark columns are Irish Yew (Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata*’*) and those beautifully sculpted domes in the foreground are Box topiary (Buxus sempervirens). Spotted on our rounds in Surrey this week and honestly, the craftsmanship here is stunning. 🌿

But spring is a critical moment for both of these plants and here is what every formal garden owner needs to know right now 👇

🔸 Irish Yew needs attention in mid-spring. Those elegant columnar columns naturally want to spread outward as they age. Without professional shaping, individual stems splay outward and the clean architectural form is lost permanently. Mid-spring is the ideal moment to tie and trim before new growth pushes through
🔸 Box Blight is your biggest threat right now. As temperatures rise and spring humidity increases, Cylindrocladium buxicola spores become active. This devastating fungal disease spreads rapidly in warm damp conditions, turning beautiful topiary brown and bare almost overnight. Early spring inspection and treatment is your best line of defence
🔸 Box Caterpillar is also active from April. The Box Tree Moth (Cydalima perspectalis) lays its eggs on Box from spring onwards. Caterpillars strip plants from the inside out, often going unnoticed until significant damage is done. A professional inspection now catches it before it takes hold
🔸 Never use power tools on Box topiary. Blunt or shared blades crush the stems and dramatically increase disease entry risk. The RHS recommends sharp, disinfected hand tools only, cleaned between each plant
Formal garden trees and topiary are an investment. They take years to establish and deserve expert care from people who understand them properly. 💚

🦕 200 million years. That is how long this species of tree has been on our planet.

This is a Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria araucana) and we genuinely could not walk past it without stopping. The Monkey Puzzle species was already growing on Earth during the Jurassic period, long before the dinosaurs disappeared. It is not just a tree. It is a living fossil and we think that is one of the most extraordinary things about the natural world. 🌲

That second photo showing the spiral leaves up close? We were completely mesmerised. Nature really does not need our help sometimes.
If you are lucky enough to have one of these in your garden, here is what you need to know 👇
🔸 Please do not prune it. This is the number one mistake people make. A Monkey Puzzle cannot regenerate from cut wood. Remove a branch and that space is gone permanently. These trees shape themselves beautifully when left alone. The only exception is careful removal of a genuinely dead branch at the trunk by a qualified arborist
🔸 It is almost certainly protected. Mature Monkey Puzzle trees are frequently covered by a Tree Preservation Order. Any work without written consent from your local authority carries an unlimited fine. Always check before you do anything
🔸 It is a globally endangered species. In its native Chile and Argentina, the Monkey Puzzle is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The specimens growing in our gardens and parks here in Surrey and West Sussex are genuinely precious and worth looking after properly
🔸 It grows very slowly. What looks like a modest sized tree could already be 50 to 100 years old. They deserve patience and proper care
